Chuck Schumer is all-in on destroying the Trump Presidency.
And he thinks he found a weak spot.
So he issued an outrageous demand to try and sabotage Trump with scandal.
Democrats – and their allies in the so-called “mainstream” media – are promoting the story that Trump fired FBI Director Jim Comey to cover up alleged ties to Russia.
There is no evidence to back up this fake news conspiracy theory, but Democrats have seized on it to push their demand for a special prosecutor.
Now Chuck Schumer is demanding no replacement for Comey be confirmed until an independent counsel is appointed.
CNN reports:
“Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer said Sunday that the Senate should refuse to confirm a new FBI director until the Department of Justice appoints a special counsel to lead a probe into allegations of collusion between the Trump campaign and Russia.
“I think there are a lot of Democrats who feel that way,” Schumer said on CNN’s “State of the Union.” “We’ll have to discuss it as a caucus, but I would support that move.”
Virginia Sen. Mark Warner, the top Democrat on the Senate intelligence committee, proposed the idea after President Donald Trump fired FBI Director James Comey last week.
Trump has yet to name his choice to replace Comey, for which interviews have taken place this weekend, and the Justice Department thus far has declined to appoint a special prosecutor. Republicans leading Congress have also declined to compel a special prosecutor or create an independent investigative commission.”
But Democrats have little recourse to backup their demands.
Schumer admitted as much.
CNN reports:
“Acknowledging Democrats’ limited influence in Congress, Schumer told anchor Jake Tapper, “The key here, of course, is getting some of our Republican colleagues to join us.”
Chuck Schumer worked with Harry Reid to change Senate rules in 2013 to allow for appointments except Supreme Court nominees to be confirmed with just 51 votes.
The only chance for Democrats to force the administration to appoint a special prosecutor would be if foolish Republicans joined the Democrats in blocking Trump’s pick to head the FBI.
Experts question why there is even a need for a special prosecutor.
To date, no one has been accused of a crime.
George Washington Law Professor Jonathan Turley questioned the need for an independent counsel on ‘Morning Joe’.
Breitbart reports:
“For weeks I’ve questioned the need for special counsel because honestly I still don’t see the underlying crime here,” Turley said. “You know, when we talk about the Russian influence and collusion, there’s not any evidence I’ve seen of collusion but more importantly, no one has articulated a major crime, as opposed to the reporting and registration violations of people like Flynn, which usually wouldn’t warrant a special counsel. But that’s the great mystery here.”
“You know, with Watergate that people have been talking about, there was a serious crime that began that led to the cover-up,” he continued. “Here you seem to have a cover-up without a crime. That’s what’s so bizarre about the conduct of the White House. It seems to be a cover-up in search of a crime. The problem with the special counsel is what will the special counsel investigate? But having said that, after they fired Comey, my view is that it’s changed, that we do need an independent investigation simply because the White House has created a credibility problem. And lots of Americans believe that there is an effort here to obstruct the investigation.”
Democrats are insisting on an independent prosecutor because those investigations turn into politically embarrassing fishing expeditions that create suspicion around an administration.
They last for years and end with headlines about prosecutions for crimes that were not the original target of the investigation.
Special Prosecutor Patrick Fitzgerald launched an investigation which hovered over the Bush administration for years after columnist Bob Novak published Valerie Plame’s name.
His sources were accused of outing a CIA agent – which didn’t happen – but administration official Scooter Libby was convicted of lying about a meeting.
A special prosecutor is the last card the Democrats have to play in this fake news Russia story.
