Chuck Schumer was left speechless.
Everything the New York Democrat thought he knew about the 2020 election was wrong.
And Chuck Schumer just fell out of his chair when he saw a shocking poll result from this key state.
John James is one of the Republicans’ top Senate recruits in the 2020 cycle.
James ran unsuccessfully in 2018 against Michigan Democrat Debbie Stabenow, but James made the race much closer than the experts predicted and that marked him as a man with a political future.
As a black conservative and former Marine that unapologetically supports President Trump, James was everything Republicans were looking for in a candidate to challenge Michigan Democrat Gary Peters in 2020.
Momentum is on James’ side.
In the third quarter fundraising period, James outraised Peter $3.1 million dollars to $2.5 million dollars.
Fundraising totals can be a proxy for voter enthusiasm and James outraising Peters is a sign that James struck a chord with the electorate that the incumbent Democrat Senator has not.
The only piece of the puzzle missing from the narrative that James is on a path to victory was polling data showing him leading Peters.
James finally got that bit of good news when a poll from the Restoration Political Action Committee – which is supporting James’ bid – released a survey showing James leading Peters 44 percent to 43 percent.
“We are not surprised by the results,” spokesman for Restoration PAC Dan Curry told the Daily Caller. “We thought voters in Michigan would be astonished to know Gary Peters, in his own words, supports ‘many aspects’ of the Green New Deal. The radical plan would kill thousands of jobs and destroy the state’s economy. Understandably, Michigan voters are alarmed by this new information.”
Peters’ embrace of a far-left agenda to impose a Communist takeover of the American economy and banning of private health insurance for 180 million Americans is proving to be politically toxic in the key swing state of Michigan.
That will have major repercussions for 2020.
Democrats need to flip four Republican-held Senate seats to win outright control of the upper chamber.
But Democrat Doug Jones in Alabama is considered the most endangered incumbent in America since he is running for re-election in a state Donald Trump romped to victory by over 20 points in 2016 and figures to carry by a similar margin in 2020.
A James win over Peters would put any hopes of a Democrat Senate takeover completely out of reach.
The poor polling for Peters also highlights the dangers the Democrats are facing as their 2020 field of candidates embraces one extreme policy proposal after another.
Even if a fake “moderate” like former Vice President Joe Biden or South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg wins the nomination and rejects the government healthcare takeover favored by Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders, the party risks being defined in the minds of voters by many top Democrats embracing that socialist scheme.
Peters trailing James in Michigan – which features to be one of the most important states on the 2020 map – shows that no matter what the polls show now, once Donald Trump begins pounding the eventual nominee for the party’s support of eliminating private health insurance for 180 million Americans, the President stands a strong chance of winning Michigan and the 2020 election.
