Chuck Schumer and the Democrats are facing a decision that could redefine American politics.
But Schumer is in for some bad news.
And that’s because Chuck Schumer got an ultimatum that will end his time in the Democrat Party.
Democrats are ramping up pressure on Schumer to change the rules of the Senate to eliminate the legislative filibuster.
Going nuclear on gutting the 60-vote threshold to end debate will allow the Democrats to ram amnesty for illegal aliens, statehood for Washington, D.C. and Puerto Rico, universal mail-in balloting and ballot harvesting, and a national gun registration database into law just with Democrat votes.
But Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell delivered a floor speech warning Democrats to be careful what they wish for.
McConnell cautioned Democrats that wiping out the filibuster would not open up an express lane to ram their agenda into law with lightning speed.
“There’s an ironic element to this whole conversation. Some Democratic senators seem to imagine this would be a tidy trade-off if they could just break the rules on a razor-thin majority,” McConnell stated. “Sure it might damage the institution, but then nothing would stand between them and their entire agenda.A new era of fast-track policymaking.”
McConnell declared that if Democrats got rid of the filibuster the Senate would turn to scorched-earth warfare where business would grind to a halt.
“So let me say this very clearly for all 99 of my colleagues: Nobody serving in this chamber can even begin, can even begin, to imagine what a completely scorched-earth Senate would look like,” McConnell added.
McConnell explained that every action the Senate takes is governed by unanimous consent and that the Republicans would employ every procedural tool available to grind the Senate to a halt.
“None of us have served one minute in a Senate that was completely drained of comedy and consent. This is an institution that requires united consent to turn the lights on before noon, to proceed with a garden variety floor, speech, to dispense with the reading of lengthy legislative text, to schedule committee business to move even non-controversial nominees at anything besides a snail pace,” McConnell added.
McConnell also stated that majorities in Washington come and go.
The Republicans may win control of the Senate in 2022 and the White House in 2024.
In that eventuality, McConnell stated that Republicans would pass legislation defunding Planned Parenthood and sanctuary cities, a national right-to-work law and national concealed carry reciprocity for all 50 states and the District of Columbia.
McConnell does not make idle threats.
When Democrats eliminated the filibuster for lower court judicial nominees in the Obama era, McConnell told them they would regret this day much sooner than they thought.
Three years later, McConnell held a Supreme Court seat open for one year and then used the Democrats’ procedural change to confirm over 200 conservative judges.
But Chuck Schumer may have no choice.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is waiting in the wings to primary Schumer if he doesn’t deliver on the liberal agenda.
If Schumer does not gut the filibuster he could face an enraged Democrat Party base with their champion challenging him in a primary.
And that could spell the end of Chuck Schumer in elected Democrat Party politics.
