Chuck Schumer is racing against the clock to ram Joe Biden’s radical agenda through the Senate.
That task just got more difficult.
And that’s because Chuck Schumer got some bad news that is about to make his life a living hell.
Democrats are trying to pass Bernie Sanders’ proposed six-trillion-dollar socialist welfare spending and Green New Deal bill through the Senate using budget reconciliation.
They also hope to string enough Republicans along to pass a nearly one-trillion-dollar “infrastructure” bill that Schumer hopes will give cover to Democrats like Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona and Joe Manchin of West Virginia to vote for the Sanders bill.
Manchin made this more of an uphill task by telling the press that the Democrats should fully pay for both bills and not add to the nearly 30 trillion dollars in debt.
“I think everything should be paid for now. I think we’ve put enough free money out,” Manchin stated.
Democrats would need to pass massive tax increases which could alienate Republicans supporting the infrastructure bill or lower the cost of the Bernie Sanders bill which would drive away votes on the left.
Chuck Schumer tried to weasel out of questions about how he planned to thread that needle without showing his cards.
“One of the things that was presented in our caucus is that we could fully pay for the bill. That’s one of the options on the table,” Schumer added.
One of the provisions Democrats hope to tuck into this bill is increased funding for the IRS.
Democrats want to hire more IRS agents to target Americans for audits believing the IRS can soak more money out of the taxpayers.
Idaho Republican Senator Mike Crapo – who serves as the ranking member on the Finance Committee – threw cold water on this idea.
“I am talking with them and seeing if we can establish some strong safeguards on anything like that… Let me put it this way — I am not going to say whether and how much [increasing IRS funding] would be appropriate. I have a number of times said that if there are those who are not paying taxes lawfully, we need to take the necessary steps to be sure they lawfully do. I’m not going to commit to or comment on any specifics now,” Crapo told reporters.
Democrats want to pay for the infrastructure with money from stepped-up tax enforcement.
But Democrats also still need to find five Republican votes to break the 60-vote filibuster.
The Democrats’ plans to create an IRS on steroids now threatens to blow up the delicate equilibrium Chuck Schumer needs to maintain to pass the real prize – Bernie Sanders’ proposed six-trillion-dollar socialist welfare and Green New Deal crown jewel.
