Democrats are digging themselves a massive political hole.
Joe Biden and his allies only now realize how much trouble they are in.
Chuck Schumer was presented with one ultimatum that has all hell breaking loose.
The House and Senate are looking to pile trillions of dollars in new debt on the heads of every American by voting to raise the debt ceiling.
D.C. swamp politicians claim – without citing any evidence – that the economy will collapse unless the government authorizes trillions in borrowing “paid” for by the Federal Reserve printing bushels of new money at a time where inflation chugs along like a runaway train.
The federal government could still prioritize debt payments, but establishment politicians ignore this fact because they want to continually borrow trillions with no questions asked.
Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell dispatched a letter to Joe Biden explaining that since Democrats control both chambers of Congress and the presidency and want to spend trillions of dollars on socialist welfare bills using party line votes then Democrats can raise the debt ceiling in the reconciliation package using a party line vote.
“Republicans’ position is simple. We have no list of demands. For two and a half months, we have simply warned that since your party wishes to govern alone, it must handle the debt limit alone as well,” McConnell wrote to Biden.
Schumer responded by sending a letter to Democrat senators rejecting using reconciliation and announcing Democrats would only pursue a debt limit increase through regular order.
“Let me be clear about the task ahead of us: we must get a bill to the President’s desk dealing with the debt limit by the end of the week. Period. We do not have the luxury of waiting until October 18th, as it is our responsibility to reassure the world that the United States meets our obligations in a timely fashion and that the full faith and credit of the United States should never be in question,” Schumer wrote.
Schumer added that the Senate would stay in session over the weekend as a means of exerting pressure on Republicans to cave in.
“Please make sure you attend the Tuesday caucus lunch this week, as we will continue to discuss this important issue. Of course, if Leader McConnell and his colleagues continue to obstruct our ability to quickly resolve the debt issue, the Senate will likely be forced to remain in session over this weekend, and possibly through the recess, to finish our work,” Schumer added.
Democrats want Republican votes on a debt ceiling increase to head off GOP candidates attacking Democrat senators for voting to dump trillions of dollars in debt on the heads of every American.
Inflation is skyrocketing at the fastest pace in decades – threatening the economy – and deficit spending will only add to the crisis.
That’s why Schumer is playing this game of chicken.
Democrats believe that as the supposed October 18 deadline approaches business interests will pressure Republicans to stand down and allow the Democrats to raise the debt ceiling.
But Schumer and Joe Biden may have miscalculated Republican resolve on this matter.
