Chuck Schumer could taste victory.
The top Senate Democrat thought he had a deal in place that would guarantee Donald Trump loses re-election.
But you won’t believe the look on Chuck Schumer’s face when he saw what Trump just said.
After twin mass shootings in Dayton, Ohio and El Paso, Texas, Chuck Schumer and other gun grabbers thought they had the President boxed into a corner.
In 2018 suburban voters helped the Democrats flip the House of Representatives.
And all the “experts” were whispering in the President’s ear that unless he rammed a national gun registration database and red flag confiscation orders through Congress his re-election campaign was toast.
President Trump even appeared to fall under the sway of the gun grabbers when after the shootings he expressed support for universal background checks.
But after an intense lobbying campaign by pro-Second Amendment organizations such as the National Association for Gun Rights, the President appeared to back off his support for gun control.
Addressing reporters at his New Jersey golf club, the President explained that the Second Amendment must be protected and the current gun control laws already on the books failed.
President Trump told the press he is “very, very concerned with the Second Amendment, more so than most presidents would be,” and also noted that “people don’t realize we have very strong background checks right now.”
“I don’t want people to forget that this is a mental health problem,” President Trump added. “I don’t want them to forget that, because it is. It’s a mental health problem.”
So-called “universal background checks” would not have stopped either shooting.
In both cases, the madmen passed background checks to legally obtain their weapons.
Gun grabbers want universal background checks because adding a background check requirement bans a father from passing firearms down to his children or friends conducting private sales.
Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi threw up their hands in disgust at this development.
The top two Democrats in Congress released a statement blasting President Trump for not going along with their scheme to grab guns.
“We’ve seen this movie before: President Trump, feeling public pressure in the immediate aftermath of a horrible shooting, talks about doing something meaningful to address gun violence, but inevitably, he backtracks in response to pressure from the NRA and the hard right,” Schumer exclaimed. “These retreats from President Trump are not only disappointing but also heartbreaking, particularly for the families of the victims of gun violence.”
“I pray that the President will listen to the 90 percent of the American people who support universal background checks,” Pelosi added.
Trump realized what Schumer and Pelosi were up to.
President Trump pushing his chips all in on gun control would fracture his base and wreck his chances for re-election.
Schumer and Pelosi know this.
They don’t care about solving mass shootings.
They care about defeating Donald Trump.
And they tried to trick the President into supporting a gun control scheme that would have replayed George H.W. Bush breaking his “read my lips” pledge about taxes.
