Chuck Schumer waited years to ascend to the position of Senate majority leader.
But his time on top may be short-lived.
Chuck Schumer’s job is in danger after one massive betrayal.
The Senate is split equally between 50 Democrats and 50 Republicans.
Chuck Schumer serves as majority leader by virtue of Vice President Kamala Harris’ ability to cast a tie-breaking vote.
But that means a change in just one seat could hand the majority to the Republicans.
And some liberals are warning Schumer that the conduct of left-wing rage mobs terrorizing Democrat Senators Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Kyrsten Sinema of Arizona could cause one or both to throw up their hands and switch parties.
This worry shot to the forefront when an illegal alien and a mob of allies from the pro-Bernie Sanders group LUCHA stalked Senator Sinema into a public bathroom at Arizona State University as they shouted at her over Sinema’s opposition to a $3.5 trillion socialist welfare bill.
Senator Sinema ducked into a stall but the mob filmed the illegal alien shouting at Sinema even though both were in a women’s restroom.
Joe Biden barely condemned the episode and even defended the mob claiming filming a woman in a public bathroom was just “part of the process.”
Bernie Sanders refused to sign on to a letter from Senate Democrats standing up for Senator Sinema because the letter did not condemn her political views.
This dynamic of Joe Biden rolling over for an ascendent aggressive and potentially violent socialist movement worried left-wing Brookings Institution Scholar Norman Ornstein.
Ornstein cited the 2001 example of Vermont Republican Jim Jeffords switching parties in a 50/50 Senate handing the Democrats a 51 to 49 majority as a cautionary tale.
In a series of social media posts Ornstein wrote:
A little advice on Sinema, which undoubtedly will not go down well, from someone who remembers Jim Jeffords. She has enabled the American Rescue Plan, a lot of judges and top executive appointees, kept the Ds in chairmanships and in charge of the agenda. Do not push too hard.
And do not push right now too harshly. This process is not over. If she singlehandedly keeps infrastructure, debt ceiling and democracy reform, that is another matter. But if you push her to switch parties, the consequences are more horrific than you can imagine. Be pragmatic!
But no one in the Democrat Party appears to be listening.
Joe Biden’s expressed frustration with Senators Manchin and Sinema to other Democrats and Bernie Sanders continues to attack them in public for not supporting the totality of Sanders’ socialist agenda.
But the end result of this pressure campaign could come back to bite Democrats as Manchin and Sinema hail from red states and liberals may not like how Sinema and/or Manchin react.
