For years, Democrats from Barack Obama on down counted on one illegal scheme to be the secret weapon in their political arsenal.
But now those Democrats are nervous.
That’s because one criminal investigation could bring down the entire Democrat Party.
The Southern Poverty Law Center serves as the left’s version of Seal Team Six.
They go on undercover operations to punish the left’s political opponents through bullying and censorship.
For decades, the Southern Poverty Law Center has smeared conservatives by branding pro-life activists, Second Amendment supporters, Christians, and Tea Party organizations as “Hate Groups.”
Those brandings took on added significance in the social media era when tech companies such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google used the SPLC’s designations to ban conservatives or censor their speech online.
This is the secret weapon the left possesses in its arsenal – the ability to launch the Southern Poverty Law Center as a guided missile against their adversaries to muzzle their ability to engage in the public debate.
If the left’s opponents cannot spread their message, they cannot mobilize for elections—then the liberals can own American politics for generations.
But those days are about to come to an end.
Arkansas Senator Tom Cotton fired off a letter to the IRS demanding they investigate revoking the Southern Poverty Law Center’s 501c(3) nonprofit tax exempt status because of flagrant violations of the law.
“Recent news reports have confirmed the long-established fact that the SPLC regularly engages in defamation of its political opponents. In fact, the SPLC’s defining characteristic is to fundraise off of defamation,” Cotton’s letter read.
“This business model has paid well. The SPLC has accrued more than $500 million in assets. According to the group’s most recent financial statement, it holds $121 million offshore in non-U.S. equity funds. The SPLC uses these assets to pay its executives lavish salaries far higher than the comparable household average.”
Cotton’s letter comes in response to the sudden resignations of SPLC’s president and legal director after former employees alleged they fostered a racist and sexist working environment.
“Further, CNN reported that the organization ‘suffers from a pervasive racist culture,’ and the SPLC’s leader has ‘been disciplined after a prior investigation into inappropriate conduct.’ The New York Times has charitably described the organization as ‘in turmoil’ and cited employees’ claims that SPLC leadership is ‘complicit in decades of racial discrimination, gender discrimination, and sexual harassment and/or assault,” Cotton continued.
The Arkansas Senator also noted that the Southern Poverty Law Center routinely defames conservatives as “Hate Groups.”
A bulletin board of Southern Poverty Law Center’s designations compares the mainstream Family Research Council and Center for Immigration Studies to the Ku Klux Klan and the Nation of Islam.
In fact, the Southern Poverty Law Center already had to pay out a $3.3 million dollar settlement to Maajid Nawaz’s Quilliam foundation after they labeled it as an “extremist” organization.
Nawaz is an anti-radical Islam activist who fights against Islamic extremism.
Cotton argued that these false and defamatory claims forfeit the Southern Poverty Law Center’s claim to be a tax exempt nonprofit organization.
“Based on these reports, and in the interest of protecting taxpayer dollars from a racist and sexist slush fund devoted to defamation, I believe that the SPLC’s conduct warrants a serious and thorough investigation,” Cotton concluded.
This investigation could be bad news heading into the 2020 election.
The Southern Poverty Law Center serves as the left’s chief censor.
If they end up out of commission, it will deprive the left of one of their most deadly advantages in the political arena.
