The migrant caravan which tried to make its way into America over the past two months made headlines across the country.
Most Americans believe the caravan was stopped at the border.
But this Democratic presidential hopeful is working to bring them into America.
Robert O’Rourke, the failed Democrat Senatorial candidate who lost to Ted Cruz (R-TX) last month and is now rumored to be gearing up for a presidential bid in 2020, is now trying to throw open America’s borders to illegal immigrants.
O’Rourke, who currently represents the Texan city of El Paso in the House of Representatives, is working to force ICE to release hundreds of detailed migrants along the US-Mexican border.
Breitbart reports, “Rep. Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), who lost his Senate bid to incumbent Republican Ted Cruz, is cited in the story as being instrumental in making sure ICE informs city officials of impending releases.”
ICE appears to be overwhelmed with the number of migrants crossing the border at El Paso.
The immigration enforcement agency issued a press release blaming Congressional inaction on addressing immigration and border security for the mass release of several hundred illegal immigrants.
“After decades of inaction by Congress, the government remains severely constrained in its ability to detain and promptly remove families with no legal basis to remain in the U.S,” the press release states.
“ICE has curtailed reviews of post-release plans from families apprehended along the southwest border. ICE continues to work with local and state officials and NGO partners in the area so they are prepared to provide assistance with transportation or other services.”
For his part, O’Rourke tweeted his support for the release of several hundred migrants.
“Many thanks to volunteers & donors who ensure that we take care of families being released by ICE in El Paso. 200 to be released today. Over 500 tomorrow,” the Texas Congressman wrote.
O’Rourke caught national attention in his bid against Ted Cruz in Texas’ senatorial election this year.
His campaign brought in tens of millions of dollars in contributions from across the nation, most notably from states such as California and New York.
While Cruz ultimately prevailed in the contest, O’Rourke came within just a few points of victory in the traditionally red-leaning state.
His rapid rise to political stardom on the left has resulted in large and growing rumors about a potential presidential bid in 2020 against Donald Trump.
O’Rourke originally denied he was planning on running for president, but has since backtracked those comments. The Texas Congressman now appears poised to announce a decision on whether or not he will run in a matter of months.
O’Rourke’s support for bringing in additional illegal immigrants into the country, especially through his own congressional district, could be a political ploy to continue to keep his name in the spotlight as he gears up for a heavily packed Democratic primary field in 2020.
The Democratic Party supports open borders in greater numbers than ever before, and O’Rourke’s political stances on the issue of immigration could catapult him to the top of the Democratic field next year.
