Donald Trump and Mike Pence are no longer allies.
The two are now openly feuding.
And Donald Trump destroyed Mike Pence with this one phone call.
Former Vice President Mike Pence made his most direct challenge to Donald Trump yet.
Pence endorsed Georgia Governor Brian Kemp and campaigned with Kemp the day before the May 24 primary.
Trump backed former Senator David Perdue’s primary challenge to Kemp over Trump’s anger at Kemp after Kemp certified the results of the 2020 election in Georgia.
Trump spokesman Taylor Budowich released a scathing statement ripping Pence for trying to recapture his relevancy by jumping on Kemp’s bandwagon after polls showed Kemp in the lead.
“Mike Pence was set to lose a governor’s race in 2016 before he was plucked up and his political career was salvaged,” Budowich’s statement read. “Now, desperate to chase his lost relevance, Pence is parachuting into races, hoping someone is paying attention. The reality is, President Trump is already 82-3 with his endorsements, and there’s nothing stopping him from saving America in 2022 and beyond.”
Pence did more with his Georgia trip than just stand in opposition to Trump-backed candidates.
In a brief interview with The New York Times, Pence refused to rule out a 2024 presidential campaign even if Donald Trump declared he was running for re-election.
“In an interview before a speech last month in Iowa, Mr. Pence pointedly declined to rule out running even if Mr. Trump also enters the 2024 primary. ‘We’ll go where we’re called,’ Mr. Pence said, explaining that he and his wife would act on prayer. ‘That’s the way Karen and I have always approached these things,’” The New York Times reported.
Trump was clearly not happy with these developments.
That same day Trump conducted a phone interview with Real America’s Voice where Trump slammed Pence and gave a preview of why Pence’s 2024 presidential campaign is doomed from the start.
“I’m very disappointed in Mike, as a lot of people are. And he just greatly disappointed me. He had a great opportunity, and all he had to do was send it back to the legislatures. Let them decide, because when you had all of that ammunition, when you had all of those things being said about the election, and you had all the–Peter Navarro and many others were talking about, it would’ve been very easy to send it back and have them come back,” Trump stated.
If Mike Pence challenges Trump in a 2024 GOP primary Trump will hammer Pence on a daily basis and Pence will quickly become the “Never Trump” candidate in the race.
And that is a quick route to political irrelevancy in the GOP.
