This underhanded strategy paid off.
And now Donald Trump faced a guilty verdict that will turn his life upside down.
Manhattan’s Democrat District Attorney Alvin Bragg won a conviction against the Trump Organization on tax fraud charges that executives at the business augmented their salary with paid perks such as rent on apartments, and paying their children’s school tuition in a politically motivated case.
The New York Times reports:
Donald J. Trump’s family real estate business was convicted on Tuesday of tax fraud and other financial crimes, a remarkable rebuke of the former president’s company and what prosecutors described as its “culture of fraud and deception.”
The conviction on all 17 counts, after more than a day of jury deliberations in State Supreme Court in Manhattan, resulted from a long-running scheme in which the Trump Organization doled out off-the-books luxury perks to some executives: They received fancy apartments, leased Mercedes-Benzes, even private school tuition for relatives, none of which they paid taxes on.
The Manhattan district attorney’s office, which led the case against two Trump Organization entities, had previously extracted a guilty plea from the architect of the scheme, Allen H. Weisselberg, the company’s long-serving chief financial officer. Mr. Weisselberg, one of the former president’s most loyal lieutenants, testified as the prosecution’s star witness, but never implicated Mr. Trump.
Hours before the jury – picked from the vast sea of Democrats in deep-blue New York City – handed down its verdict, Trump posted on Truth Social that the Democrat district attorney in New York turned a blind eye to the raging crime spree in order to wage a politically motivated prosecution against Trump.
“Murder and Violent Crime is at an all-time high in NYC, and the D.A.’s office has spent almost all of its time & money fighting a political Witch Hunt for D.C. against ‘Trump’ over Fringe Benefits, something that in the history of our Country, has never been so tried in Court before. Two weeks at trial, yet no MURDER CASE has gone to trial in 6 years, much to the consternation of victims mothers and families who are devastated that NOTHING is being done to bring JUSTICE. Too busy on ‘Donald,’” Trump wrote.
Trump was never targeted in the prosecution and there was no evidence Trump was involved.
Prosecutors also won a $1.6 million fine against the Trump Organization – an amount so trivial – that even The New York Times called it a “rounding error.”
But the point was not to actually punish Trump.
The goal was to damage Trump politically so media outlets can run headlines about Trump running a tax cheat business as Trump ramps up his 2024 re-election campaign.
After Trump won the 2016 election Democrats settled on a strategy of trying to use the FBI and prosecutors to destroy Trump to make it seem like “nonpartisan” institutions – when in reality they are controlled by the left – called Trump corrupt and a threat to the Republic.
And Democrats intend to keep up the lawfare against Trump as long as he keeps running for re-election.
