The establishment is throwing everything including the kitchen sink at Donald Trump to stop Trump’s re-election campaign.
Now GOP elites think they found the silver bullet.
And Donald Trump just learned some really bad news about 2024.
The first Republican presidential debate will take place later this summer.
Debates are the lifeblood of a presidential campaign as they provide free advertising for the candidates to make their case in front of tens of millions of viewers.
And the Republican National Committee wants to use the debates to spring a trap on Donald Trump.
RNC Chairwoman Ronna McDaniel is planning to force all candidates to sign a loyalty oath and ban any candidate from the debate stage if they refuse to support the eventual nominee.
McDaniel and other GOP bigwigs came up with this plan after Trump told radio host Hugh Hewitt his decision on supporting the nominee would “depend on who the nominee was.”
And in an even bigger threat to the GOP establishment a Monmouth University poll found 27 percent of Republicans support the idea of Trump running third-party if he fails to win the nomination.
In 2016 Trump cemented his anti-establishment, outsider persona by being the only candidate in the first GOP debate not to raise his hand when asked if they would support the eventual nominee.
McDaniel claimed this plan to force Trump into accepting an establishment nominee was about party unity.
“We do need to come out of this primary united. And we have a lot of candidates running saying, ‘I’ll never support Trump,’ and if you are going to get on this debate stage, you are going to have to say, ‘I’m going to support the nominee,’” McDaniel stated. “We cannot have a rigorous debate process and come out with a nominee and have anyone say, ‘I’m walking away.’”
In reality, the GOP establishment thinks if Trump rejects the pledge his candidacy will wither on the vine without debate exposure.
This pledge could also hurt Never Trumpers.
Former Arkansas Governor Asa Hutchison whined this loyalty pledge would force him to commit to endorsing Donald Trump if Trump won the nomination.
“Historically, our party has not taken party loyalty oaths,” Hutchinson complained. “For leaders such as myself who believe Donald Trump is not the right direction for the country — and I said specifically that Jan. 6 disqualified him — that would certainly make it a problem for me to give an across-the-board inclusion pledge.”
McDaniel claimed the point of this loyalty pledge was to make sure the party remained united in the general election and that the committee would stay neutral in the primary.
“The RNC will remain neutral during the Republican presidential primary and that’s why it is so important for the RNC to ensure a fair and transparent process for the 2024 Republican candidates to debate,” McDaniel said in a statement to the Washington Post. “After the primary, it is imperative to the health and growth of our Republican Party, as well as the country, that we all come together and unite behind our nominee to defeat Joe Biden and the Democrats.”
In reality, the point of the pledge is to box in Donald Trump because the establishment still fears Trump and his supporters.
