Both Donald Trump and Mike Pence are contemplating their role in the 2024 campaign.
Now Mike Pence got some bad news.
And that’s because Donald Trump just made this big announcement about Mike Pence’s future.
Mike Pence badly wants to run for president in 2024.
But Donald Trump is also seriously considering a 2024 White House comeback bid.
If Trump runs for president in three years, Pence could wait his turn and finally launch his own presidential campaign in 2028 since if Trump won in 2024 he could only serve one term.
However, in an interview on Fox Business Channel,Trump may have driven a dagger through the heart of Pence’s presidential prospects.
Trump was asked about 2024 and if he would consider Florida’s popular Governor Ron DeSantis as his running mate.
It did not take long for Trump to endorse the idea of selecting DeSantis to replace Pence on the ticket as his running mate.
“Well, he’s a friend of mine. I endorsed Ron. And after I endorsed him, he took off like a rocket ship,” Trump told host Maria Bartiromo. “He’s done a great job as governor.”
What Trump said about DeSantis’ emergence on the political scene was true.
DeSantis badly trailed his rivals in a crowded Florida Republican governor primary.
Many of Trump’s advisors—including Pence—wanted Trump to not endorse anyone to allow the establishment candidate to win.
But Trump backed DeSantis—who was a member of the conservative House Freedom Caucus—because DeSantis regularly defended Trump on Fox News against the Russian collusion hoax.
After Trump’s endorsement DeSantis rocketed up in the polls and won the nomination.
In the general election against Democrat Andrew Gillum, Trump’s support played a major role in DeSantis’ narrow win.
Trump cited DeSantis’s star turn as Florida Governor—DeSantis rejected mask mandates and quickly dismissed lockdowns while running circles around the attacks from the corporate media—as why DeSantis would be a good choice as his running mate in 2024.
“A lot of people like that — I’m just saying what I read and what you read, they love that ticket,” Trump continued. “But certainly, Ron would be considered. He’s a great guy.”
What stood out about Trump’s answer was the fact that Trump did not mention Pence at all.
Trump did not express even the slightest hint that he still considered Pence his running mate or that he wasn’t considering shaking up the ticket if he won the 2024 GOP nomination.
The relationship between Trump and Pence is the subject of much speculation.
Trump blames Pence for not rejecting certified Electoral College results from states that Trump claimed were tainted by massive voter fraud.
Pence explained that the Constitution only permitted him to read the results as submitted.
Former Vice President Pence still praises Trump at every turn with the knowledge that any 2024 campaign would be dead on arrival with a hostile Trump criticizing him at every turn.
But Trump not even making a cursory mention that he has a running mate cannot be good news for Mike Pence.
If Trump picks someone else as his running mate in 2024, that individual displaces Mike Pence as the “heir apparent” in the Republican Party.
And that snub could spell the end of Mike Pence’s political career.
