Nancy Pelosi made her strongest move yet to remove Donald Trump from office.
Now the battle lines are drawn on a fight that will define the 2020 election.
And Donald Trump gave Nancy Pelosi this warning that could send her into retirement.
Before Donald Trump addressed the United Nations General Assembly, the President spoke with reporters about the fake “scandal” surrounding his July 25 phone call with the Ukrainian President.
Democrats and their partners in the fake news media concocted this phony “scandal” to revive their flagging impeachment efforts.
The President fired a warning shot across Nancy Pelosi’s bow by telling the press that impeachment would benefit him politically and that it would be bad for the country.
“If she does that, they all say that’s a positive for me from the election. You could also say, who needs it? It’s bad for the country,” Trump told the fake news media.
The President noted that Pelosi was pressing forward with an impeachment fight despite not knowing any of the relevant facts about his phone call with the Ukrainian President.
“How can you do this and you haven’t even seen the phone call?” President Trump wondered.
President Trump explained that “the good news is the voters get it. This is why they say it’s good for the election, but you know what? It’s bad for the country. What she’s doing is very bad.”
But Pelosi did not heed Trump’s warning.
During a closed-door meeting with the House Democrat caucus, Pelosi tiptoed toward an impeachment inquiry.
“It would be my intention with the consent of this Caucus…. to proceed with an impeachment inquiry,” Pelosi told the assembled Democrats.
Pelosi later more forcefully declared her party’s intention to march into this impeachment fight with the President.
“Today, I’m announcing the House of Representatives is moving forward with an official impeachment inquiry,” Pelosi told the press. “The actions of the Trump presidency revealed dishonorable facts of the president’s betrayal of his oath of office, betrayal of national security and betrayal of the integrity of our elections.”
But this move holds great risk for Pelosi.
This scandal is fake.
A politically motivated whistleblower lodged a complaint to hurt the President.
There is zero chance the Republican Senate will vote to convict the President.
That means Donald Trump can run for re-election claiming full vindication and exoneration from the Democrats’ charges of corruption and being unfit for office.
In addition, impeachment polls poorly.
But impeaching Donald Trump means impeachment will be the central issue in the 2020 campaign.
That is bad news for Democrats on multiple fronts.
First, it could help Donald Trump win re-election.
And if Donald Trump wins re-election his coattails could carry Republicans back into a majority in the House.
If that happens the knives will be out in the Democrat caucus and pointed squarely at Pelosi for leading the party down this disastrous path.
