Donald Trump is plotting a 2024 comeback.
But Trump could face one unexpected obstacle.
And Donald Trump was blindsided by what Mike Pence told him about 2024.
If Donald Trump runs for president in 2024 some Republicans appear intent on challenging Trump for the GOP nomination.
Joe Biden’s sagging approval ratings, the limping economy, and the failure at the border and in Afghanistan makes whoever wins the 2024 GOP nomination the favorite to win the White House.
Two Republicans that look ready to jump into the 2024 field regardless of what Donald Trump decides are two men that used to work for President Trump – former Secretary of State Mike Pompeo and former Vice President Mike Pence.
New York Times reporter Maggie Haberman told CNNthat “Mike Pompeo has told a number of people he told Trump directly he will run even if Trump runs.”
Haberman – who passes herself off as a supposed “Trump world expert” – did not elaborate on how Trump reacted to Pompeo’s announcement.
“Did [Trump] get annoyed?” Haberman wondered. “We’re never going to know, it’s a conversation between the two of them, but [Pompeo] is one of the people saying that.”
Haberman later wrote on social media that a Pompeo aide told her the two men joked about 2024 backstage at CPAC.
“A Pompeo aide tells me it was ‘a joke’ Pompeo was making with Trump shortly after their CPAC speeches and not a serious statement of intentions. Won’t say where Pompeo’s head is on whether Trump is factoring into his calculations. Pompeo is making early moves toward 2024,” Haberman posted on Twitter.
But more reporters than just Haberman indicated Pence will challenge Trump.
The Washington Examiner’s David Drucker also reported that Mike Pence is a go for 2024 even if Donald Trump enters the race.
Pence served for four years as Donald Trump’s loyal vice president.
Corporate media activists like Haberman routinely mocked Pence for defending Trump at all times as if Mike Pence was the first vice president to stick up for his boss.
Haberman claimed of Pence that “he will have a hard time running if Trump does, as would Pompeo for the same reason,” – meaning that the two spent four years serving Trump but now want to remove him as the head of the Republican Party.
The biggest obstacle to Mike Pence running for president in 2024 with or without Donald Trump in the field is January 6.
Donald Trump still contends Mike Pence could have rejected the results from states that Trump claimed were the result of fraud and sent them back to the state legislatures.
A chunk of Trump’s base agrees and would never support Pence under any circumstances even though Pence argued the Constitution only granted him a ceremonial role in the electoral vote counting process.
