Donald Trump continues to float the idea of a political comeback.
But no one expected this.
And Donald Trump was offered a new job that will make Nancy Pelosi’s blood boil.
On the day Facebook announced it would lift its suspension of Donald Trump’s account in 2023, Trump faced a different question about his political future.
Pro-Trump radio host Wayne Allyn Root interviewed Trump and asked Trump for his thoughts on former chief strategist Steve Bannon’s suggestion that Trump run for Congress in order to claim the mantle of speaker of the House should Republicans take back the majority.
Bannon suggested that Trump could then lead an impeachment against Joe Biden and use that as a stepping stone to a 2024 presidential campaign.
Trump entertained the idea.
“That’s so interesting,” Trump responded.
Trump told Root this was not the first time someone pitched Trump on running in the 2022 midterms saying other allies asked him to run for Senate.
“Yeah, you know it’s very interesting,” Trump continued. “But you know what, your idea might be better. It’s very interesting.”
Technically Trump does not even need to be elected to the House of Representatives to become speaker of the House.
The House of Representatives elects the speaker based on a majority vote and the speaker is not required to be a member of the House.
Most of the speculation about Trump’s future centers around a presidential comeback.
If Trump runs again in 2024, he will be the first ex-president since Teddy Roosevelt in 1916 to mount a campaign for his old job.
Facebook announcing Trump is eligible to regain access to their platform opens the door to a third presidential campaign.
Without access to Facebook, Trump could not run ads at tens of millions of voters on the platform or communicate with them.
Few believe Trump would actually run for Congress.
The district where his Mar-a-Lago residence is located is a heavily Democratic stronghold.
Florida will have a new congressional map for the 2022 election, but many believe it is not realistic that Trump would follow Bannon’s plan and run for the House, and if he won, turn around and immediately run for president.
Others believe that Facebook making Trump’s return to the platform conditional as well as the existence of the criminal investigation in New York into the Trump organization makes it more likely Trump will run for president in 2024.
“Preventing someone running for president from having a platform raises bigger questions than a private citizen. That goes double for prosecuting someone. In both cases, the worse his situation gets the more motive to run or at least act like he’s running. This is predictable,” NBC’s Benjy Sarlin wrote on social media.
What is clear is that by virtue of Facebook announcing that Donald Trump’s ban may end on January 7, 2023, Trump is once again front and center in the political conversation.
In a matter of hours Trump was asked about running for Congress and replacing Nancy Pelosi as Speaker of the House as well as talked about as a presidential contender.
