The coronavirus pandemic infected millions and ravaged economies around the globe as governments imposed lockdowns on their citizens.
Americans are looking for an end to the bad news.
But Fox News pushed one panic button that no one wanted to hear.
America appears to have passed the peak of the coronavirus.
Daily new cases have plateaued and are beginning to decline and the death toll – which is always a lagging indicator –stabilized.
But some top health officials worry America is not out of the woods yet.
In fact, America had yet to experience the worst of the coronavirus pandemic.
Centers for Disease Control Director Dr. Robert Redfield warned in an interview with the Washington Post that the coronavirus could strike America with a second wave next year that could be worse than the current outbreak because it would come on top of the seasonal flu running through the nation.
“There’s a possibility that the assault of the virus on our nation next winter will actually be even more difficult than the one we just went through,” Dr. Redfield told the Post. “And when I’ve said this to others, they kind of put their head back, they don’t understand what I mean.”
“We’re going to have the flu epidemic and the coronavirus epidemic at the same time,” Dr. Redfield added.
During the coronavirus task force White House briefing, Fox News anchor Bret Baier pressed this panic button.
Baier asked White House coronavirus task force coordinator Doctor Deborah Birx if a second wave would inflict more death and misery on America than the current outbreak.
“The CDC Director said in an interview that perhaps this second wave of coronavirus in the fall could be worse because it is timed with the seasonal flu,” Baier stated, then asked Dr. Birx how that would fit into the guidelines to reopen the country.
Dr. Birx responded by politely disagreeing with Dr. Redfield and ticked off all the ways the country would be on sound footing to prepare for any second wave of coronavirus.
“We were very clear in the guidelines that we believe we can monitor, again monitor communities at the community level, by using the influenza-like illness and the syndromic respiratory and gastrointestinal components of this particular virus,” Dr. Birx began.
Dr. Birx also stated that the administration was building a testing capacity to differentiate between the flu and coronavirus and that there would be therapeutic treatments available.
Finally, Dr. Birx revealed that President Trump had the task force map out the next 90 days and beyond which is why the President ordered hundreds of thousands of new ventilators and millions of masks, gowns and gloves to replenish the national stockpile.
The coronavirus is clearly a dangerous infection to at-risk groups.
And it clearly spreads more easily than the flu.
But the doomsday scenarios of exhausted and infected doctors dying on top of patients in hallways of overcrowded hospitals never came close to true.
That should stop media organizations like Fox News and officials like Dr. Redfield from fear mongering about a second coronavirus wave.
Unfortunately that has yet to happen.
