The 2020 Presidential campaign is quickly taking shape.
And every Democrat thinks voters will throw Donald Trump out of office in 2020.
But Fox News aired a reality check that took President Trump completely by surprise.
A recent Quinnipiac poll was the talk of Washington.
The survey found Joe Biden leading Donald Trump by 13 points.
In the poll, Bernie Sanders, Elizabeth Warren, Kamala Harris, and Pete Buttigieg also led the President in hypothetical matchups.
During a recent broadcast of “America’s Newsroom,” Sandra Smith and Martha MacCallum discussed the poll’s findings.
Smith and MacCallum got to the bad news first.
“It has all of those 2020 Democratic contenders, Martha, beating the president if it were held today,” Smith told MacCallum.
MacCallum responded that, “the president isn’t wanting to focus on the numbers right now and perhaps it’s wise to some extent.”
There is a lot of truth in what MacCallum told viewers.
Polls 500 days out from an election have no predictive value.
In fact, Quinnipiac’s poll from a similar point in the 2016 election cycle found Hillary Clinton leading Donald Trump by 18 points.
Even so, MacCallum said she believed the Trump team needed to study the numbers and see where they needed to shore up their weak spots.
“But you have to look at that if you’re on the Trump team and say there are some messages here,” MacCallum added.
“Anybody on the Trump campaign would be wrong not to take notice of these numbers and asks what’s going on.”
MacCallum then took all the steam out of this poll.
The Fox News anchor noted that incumbents rarely lose re-elections and that Trump had the booming economy as his ace in the hole.
“He is an incumbent, the economy is going gangbusters. He has a good story to tell on a number of fronts. Shaking it up on foreign policy whether you like the tactics or not,” MacCallum concluded.
There is also some evidence that Joe Biden is not a juggernaut candidate.
Biden’s post-announcement bounce faded and his poll numbers declined in recent weeks.
The former Vice President also damaged his campaign by changing his positions twice on federal funding for abortion on demand.
In addition, Trump campaign pollster Tony Fabrizio noted that Biden’s weakness with liberal voters would prove to be his undoing.
“While hidden at the moment, Biden has a base problem. Sanders and Warren are outflanking him on the left. So when the aura of his ballot strength against @realDonaldTrump fades, so will his lead in the Dem primaries,” Fabrizio tweeted.
But the strongest reason to discount these polls is that they are too far out from the election to mean anything.
Until the voters are faced with a binary choice, all polling data is meaningless.
