Adam Schiff found out about a nasty curveball coming his way.
It could cost Schiff everything.
Adam Schiff got some bad news about Oprah ending his career with one shocking move.
89-year-old Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-CA) announced she would not seek re-election.
Adam Schiff announced his intention to run for Feinstein’s seat and even received the endorsement of Nancy Pelosi.
Schiff established himself as the favorite in the race.
But now Schiff is facing a career crisis.
Feinstein’s been absent from Washington for months as she dealt with complications from shingles which turned into a virus called Ramsay Hunt syndrome.
“Ms. Feinstein’s frail appearance was a result of several complications after she was hospitalized for shingles in February, some of which she has not publicly disclosed. The shingles spread to her face and neck, causing vision and balance impairments and facial paralysis known as Ramsay Hunt syndrome. The virus also brought on a previously unreported case of encephalitis, a rare but potentially debilitating complication of shingles that a spokesman confirmed on Thursday after The New York Times first revealed it, saying that the condition had ‘resolved itself’ in March,” The New York Times reported.
Ramsay Hunt syndrome affects neurological functions and impairs the brain and the ability to walk.
When Feinstein returned to Washington there were uncomfortable photos of a clearly impaired Feinstein being pushed around in a wheelchair.
Feinstein also could not remember being away from Washington telling one reporter she had been in D.C. the entire time.
Democrats already planted a whisper campaign about Feinstein having dementia in a bid to force her to retire.
With Democrats holding a narrow majority in the Senate many in the media and the party want Feinstein to retire now so California Governor Gavin Newsom can appoint a replacement who will be on the job every day and whose vote they can count on.
Feinstein tried to fight back against this effort by claiming she will stay on the job.
“I’m back in Washington, voting and attending committee meetings while I recover from complications related to a shingles diagnosis. I continue to work and get results for California,” a statement from Feinstein claimed.
But that is not stopping the rumor mill.
Feinstein is clearly in ill health and not getting better.
And many are uncomfortable with the idea of a clearly deteriorating Feinstein forcing herself to remain in the Senate.
California Governor Gavin Newsom promised to appoint a black woman to the Senate if Feinstein retired early.
And one of the names at the top of the list is TV star and media mogul Oprah Winfrey.
“Media mogul Oprah Winfrey is being floated as a potential replacement for ailing Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) should the 89-year-old lawmaker step down before the end of her term, according to a report,” the New York Post reported.
If Newsom appoints Winfrey to the Senate, there is no guarantee that she will treat this as a caretaker position and bow out of the 2024 race.
Should Winfrey decide she wants to run for a full term it is hard to see any way Winfrey does not win a full term to the Senate.
And Winfrey winning a six-year term to the Senate would spell the end of the line for Schiff in electoral politics.
