Democrats are still trying to disqualify Donald Trump from running for president in 2024.
Now Trump’s enemies think they found a silver bullet.
Ivanka Trump is about to cut a deal that is going to leave Donald Trump red with rage.
With the prosecutors in New York resigning over the new district attorney believing there is no case against Donald Trump in an investigation into Trump supposedly inflating the value of his assets to obtain favorable loans, the January 6 Select Committee is the Democrats’ last chance to criminally prosecute Donald Trump.
Nancy Pelosi created the committee to act as a third impeachment inquiry of Donald Trump.
And now the committee is in talks with Ivanka Trump to secure her testimony.
The New York Times reports:
Ivanka Trump, former President Donald J. Trump’s eldest daughter who served as one of his senior advisers, is in talks with the House committee investigating the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol about the possibility of sitting for an interview with the panel, according to two people familiar with the discussions.
It was not immediately clear whether the negotiations, which aides described as preliminary, would result in Ms. Trump providing substantive information to the inquiry or whether they were simply a stalling tactic, as some committee aides fear. But it was the latest example of the panel trying to reach into the former president’s inner circle to ascertain what he was doing and saying as rioters stormed the Capitol in his name.
The committee wants to recommend that the Biden Department of Justice prosecute Donald Trump for interfering with Congress certifying Joe Biden’s election on January 6.
Ivanka Trump spent time with Donald Trump in the time between when the riot started and when Trump posted a video asking the protestors at the Capitol to go home.
The committee hopes to use Ivanka Trump’s testimony to concoct a story about Trump’s state of mind that Trump supposedly welcomed the riot to “prove” that Trump intended to obstruct Congress from certifying the results of the 2020 election.
Some Trump aides like former chief strategist Steve Bannon and former chief of staff Mark Meadows said they would respect Donald Trump’s assertion of executive privilege and not testify in front of the committee.
The committee referred both for criminal prosecution for contempt of Congress.
The full House of Representatives then voted to refer Meadows and Bannon for criminal prosecution.
Biden’s Justice Department indicted Bannon, but Meadows’s fate is undecided.
Ivanka Trump looks like she wanted to avoid that legal mess, so she instead looks to negotiate the parameters of her cooperation with a committee that is trying to throw her father in jail.
