Former Defense Secretary James Mattis finally broke his silence after resigning from Donald Trump’s cabinet.
And no one could believe what Mattis said.
And that’s because James Mattis just went public with a betrayal of Donald Trump that no one saw coming.
Former Secretary of Defense Mattis resigned last December in protest of Donald Trump’s decision to end Barack Obama’s failed war in Syria.
Mattis fought President Trump over the President’s decision to withdraw from Obama’s disastrous Iran nuclear deal and the Paris Global Warming Accords as well as Trump’s decision to reverse Obama’s foolhardy plan to allow transgenders to serve in the military.
But the decision to bring America’s troops home from Syria proved to be a bridge too far and Mattis resigned claiming at the time that the President deserved a Secretary of Defense that shared his values.
Now Mattis is opening up on his time with the Trump administration.
And in a Wall Street Journal essay, Mattis attacks Trump’s values without mentioning Trump by name.
Mattis raged about the President demanding NATO allies meet their required level of defense spending and not rely on America to pick up the tab for Europe’s national defense.
To Mattis as well as other globalists, this amounted to treason since defenders of the liberal new world order look at America as the world’s piggy bank and policemen.
“Nations with allies thrive, and those without them wither. Alone, America cannot protect our people and our economy. At this time, we can see storm clouds gathering. A polemicist’s role is not sufficient for a leader,” Mattis wrote.
“Returning to a strategic stance that includes the interests of as many nations as we can make common cause with, we can better deal with this imperfect world we occupy together. Absent this, we will occupy an increasingly lonely position, one that puts us at increasing risk in the world,” Mattis whined.
But Donald Trump has never preached “America alone.”
The President’s policy is America first.
The liberal world order worked out great for the citizens of other nations but it was mainly American troops fighting endless wars in the Middle East and it was American industry that faced extinction due to international trade deals.
Mattis and other defenders of the status quo could not wrap their minds around an American president questioning an arrangement that put the needs of U.S. citizens last.
And Mattis’s growing frustration with Trump rejecting Obama’s globalist agenda led Mattis to eventually resign.
“Using every skill I had learned during my decades as a Marine, I did as well as I could for as long as I could. When my concrete solutions and strategic advice, especially keeping faith with our allies, no longer resonated, it was time to resign, despite the limitless joy I felt serving alongside our troops in defense of our Constitution,” Mattis added.
Mattis concluded his piece by taking another shot at Trump by claiming America was “better than our current politics.”
“All Americans need to recognize that our democracy is an experiment—and one that can be reversed. We all know that we’re better than our current politics. Tribalism must not be allowed to destroy our experiment,” Mattis ranted.
Mattis never had to mention the President’s name in this piece.
Just offering his thoughts on America’s current political climate would be enough for the fake news media to run with comments as an attack on President Trump.
