Democrats knew House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler was a ticking time bomb.
On the first day of impeachment House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s gamble to put Nadler on the team of House Managers trying the case in the Senate blew up in the Democrats’ faces.
And that’s because Jerry Nadler said two words about impeachment that had all hell breaking loose.
Democrats knew Nadler was a partisan loose cannon and hoped that by holding his speaking part till the wee hours of the morning on the first day of the trial they could minimize Nadler’s potential damage.
That turned out to be nothing but wishful thinking.
After midnight, Nadler began to speak toward the end of a series of futile amendments put forth by Chuck Schumer and the Democrats to call new witnesses and subpoena additional documents that the House refused to pursue in their impeachment inquiry.
Republicans held firm on their intention to follow the 1999 Clinton impeachment trial model and hold any votes on new witnesses until after opening arguments and allowing the Senators to submit written questions.
Nadler ranted and raved in a fierce display of partisan pyrotechnics claiming Republicans engaged in a “cover-up” and accusing the President’s lawyers of “lying.”
“I see a lot of senators voting for a cover-up, voting to deny witnesses, an absolutely indefensible vote, obviously a treacherous vote,” Nadler fumed.
White House Counsel Pat Cipollone fired back that Nadler should be embarrassed by his unhinged conduct and that Nadler should apologize to the President and his family.
“The only one who should be embarrassed, Mr. Nadler, is you for the way you’ve addressed this body,” Cipollone declared. “This is the United States Senate. You’re not in charge here.”
Nadler’s conduct was so out of line that Chief Justice John Roberts chided both sides for a lack of civil behavior.
“I think it is appropriate at this point for me to admonish both the House managers and president’s counsel in equal terms to remember that they are addressing the world’s greatest deliberative body,” Roberts stated. “Those addressing the Senate should remember where they are.”
Republicans were not about to let Nadler off the hook.
Multiple Republican Senators revealed that Nadler’s partisan conduct poisoned the impeachment hearing and hurt the Democrats’ chances of persuading four Republicans to join them in voting to allow new witnesses to testify.
“If the Democrats are smart, they won’t put Jerry Nadler on the field again,” Wisconsin Republican Ron Johnson told the press. “He was so out of line. It’s offensive accusing us of a cover-up.”
“To my Democratic colleagues, you can say what you want about me, but I’m covering up nothing,” South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham exclaimed.
The fake news media held out hope the Democrats’ impeachment trial presentation could at least sway Republicans to support witnesses and let the Democrats conduct a fishing expedition that froze the Senate for weeks on end.
But just one day into the proceedings, those hopes were dashed because of Nadler’s boorish behavior.
