Former Vice President Joe Biden’s campaign is on the rocks.
Scandals and gaffes are piling up.
And Joe Biden made this career-killing mistake that might be the final nail in his coffin.
At a fundraiser in New York City where Biden raked in hundreds of thousands of dollars in campaign contributions, he made what could be the costliest mistake of his life.
According to a press pool report, Biden praised his ability to work with pro-segregation Senators.
“I was in a caucus with James O. Eastland,” Biden told the well-heeled attendees. “He never called me ‘boy,’ he always called me ‘son.’”
Biden also discussed his working relationship with pro-segregation Senator Herman Talmadge.
The former Vice President referred to Talmadge as one of the “meanest” Senators he ever knew, but had been able to put that aside to work with him.
“Well guess what?” Biden continued.
“At least there was some civility. We got things done. We didn’t agree on much of anything. We got things done. We got it finished. But today you look at the other side and you’re the enemy. Not the opposition, the enemy. We don’t talk to each other anymore.”
Democrats smelled blood in the water.
Biden holds the top position in the Democrat primary polls based on his strength with older Democrats as well as black voters.
Biden’s fellow Presidential contenders saw an opening to drive a wedge between the former Vice President and black voters.
New Jersey Democrat Corey Booker – whose campaign is on life support – blasted Biden for joking about how former Senator Eastland would use the slur “boy” when referring to black men.
“You don’t joke about calling black men ‘boys.’ Men like James O. Eastland used words like that, and the racist policies that accompanied them, to perpetuate white supremacy and strip black Americans of our very humanity,” Booker’s statement began.
Booker used Biden’s comments about Eastland and Talmadge to hit Biden on two fronts.
Not only did Booker attack his rival for praising segregationists, but Booker also hit Biden on his claims to ‘work across the aisle.’
“Vice President Biden’s relationships with proud segregationists are not the model for how we make America a safer and more inclusive place for black people, and for everyone. I have to tell Vice President Biden, as someone I respect, that he is wrong for using his relationships with Eastland and Talmadge as examples of how to bring our country together,” Booker said.
The Democrat base is angry.
And many liberals believe Biden is out of his mind for claiming he can negotiate bipartisan deals with Republicans.
Booker subtly tapped into that anger by whacking Biden for praising his ability to cut agreements with segregationists.
This episode shows how wobbly Biden’s standing really is.
Democrat voters are with him not out of any love for Biden personally or because they judge him to be a champion on their issues.
Biden sits atop the polls because of his name identification and the belief that he can win against Trump.
But anything that punctures his aura of electability will bring his campaign crashing down.
