Senator John McCain (R-AZ) seems to have made it his goal to anger as many conservatives as possible.
He has constantly attacked President Trump, and worked against his agenda time and time again.
And the latest thing he did may be his worst attack yet, and it’s sure to anger both President Trump and the military community.
President Trump’s announced ban on transgender soldiers was applauded by conservatives across the country.
There was no justification for the increased cost required to keep them in the military.
While most Republicans agree with the decision, not all elected Republicans do.
Senator John McCain has made his disagreement extremely vocal, sending out a press release immediately following the ban announcement expressing his anger, and intention to fight it.
And now he’s taking his words into action, siding with a number of Democrats in co-sponsoring a bill that would block Trump’s announced ban.
As reported by The Hill:
“Senate Armed Services Committee Chairman John McCain (R-Ariz.) is backing a bipartisan bill that would block President Trump’s ban on transgender people serving in the military.
“When less than one percent of Americans are volunteering to join the military, we should welcome all those who are willing and able to serve our country,” McCain said in a statement.
“Any member of the military who meets the medical and readiness standards should be allowed to serve — including those who are transgender,” he said.
This is the latest show of resistance by McCain, who has frequently been a thorn in Trump’s side. Most dramatically, McCain cast the deciding vote in July to kill the Senate’s attempt at repealing Obamacare. As a Russia hawk, he’s also blasted Trump’s attempted rapprochement with Moscow, and as Armed Service chairman, has frequently criticized Trump for requesting lower-than-expected defense spending and taking months to develop an Afghanistan strategy.
McCain, committee ranking member Jack Reed (D-R.I.), committee member Kirsten Gillibrand (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) introduced the bill as stand-alone legislation on Friday.”
Senator McCain is clearly taking the side of Democrats in order to snub Trump.
And clearly, Democrats are taking notice.
In his home state of Arizona, McCain has a higher approval rating with Democrats than he does with Republicans.
This is no surprise when a “Republican” votes like the Democrats, the left takes notice.
From sinking the “skinny” Obamacare repeal bill to his left-wing views on immigration, he has distanced himself far away from his Republican base of support.
And McCain isn’t the only Republican to defy the President on this issue, Senator Susan Collins (R-ME) also co-sponsored the bill blocking Trump’s transgender military ban.
This is her second effort to stop Trump’s ban.
Her first effort was working alongside Senator Kirsten Gillibrand (D-NY) to introduce an amendment to another bill in order to repeal the ban.
After that effort failed, they introduced their own bill designed to do the same thing.
It is unlikely the bill will pass, but with enough “Republicans” turning their back on Trump, anything could happen.
