Kamala Harris is handling her highest profile assignment since assuming office.
Her job got off to a rocky start.
And that’s because Kamala Harris flubbed one question that is bad news for Democrats.
Back in February, Joe Biden tapped Kamala Harris to run point on his administration’s response to the border crisis.
The number of illegal aliens crossing the borders is reaching levels not seen in 20 years.
Republicans point to the words of illegal aliens who tell media outlets Joe Biden is why they are pouring over the border as evidence Joe Biden caused this catastrophe.
Harris’ team understood this was a no-win situation as Democrats want to unwind Donald Trump’s immigration policies and that any failure to stem the flow of illegal aliens flowing into the country could damage a future presidential campaign.
That’s why Harris and her aides tried so hard to push the idea that Harris was only in charge of the root causes of illegal immigration as opposed to stopping illegal immigration.
Critics contend there is no difference between the two, but friendly media outlets were happy to let Harris off the hook with that answer.
This attempt to walk a tightrope collapsed in an interview with NBC’s Lester Holt during a trip by Harris to Guatemala.
Republicans point to the fact that Harris has yet to visit the border as evidence she is not taking this crisis seriously.
Holt teed up a softball for Harris to respond to that line of attack.
“Do you have any plans to visit the border?” Holt asked Harris.
But that’s where the interview flew off the rails.
Harris falsely claimed she had already been to the border.
“At some point. You know, we are going to the border. We’ve been to the border. So, this whole thing about the border — we’ve been to the border. We’ve been to the border,” Harris shot back.
That caused Holt to interject that Harris had not been to the border since entering office.
Harris bombed that answer by claiming she’s also never been to Europe and claiming not to understand the question.
“I mean, I don’t understand the point that you’re making,” Harris stated. “I’m not discounting the importance of the border.”
Harris pivoted to trying to get back on her talking points about addressing the root problems of illegal immigration being her primary mission.
“I care about what’s happening at the border. I’m in Guatemala because my focus is dealing with the root causes of migration,” Harris continued. “There may be some who think that that is not important but it is my firm belief that if we care about what’s happening at the border, we better care about the root causes and address them, and so that’s what I’m doing.”
But Guatemalan President Alejandro Giammattei told CBS’s “Face the Nation” that the root cause of illegal aliens fleeing his country to march towards the United States was Joe Biden’s policies.
“The message [for migrants] changed [under Biden] too: ‘We’re going to reunite families, we’re going to reunite children,’” Giammattei stated.
“The very next day [after the Biden administration’s welcoming message], the coyotes were here organizing groups of children to take them to the United States,” Giammattei continued.
The major headline coming out of Harris’ trip ended up not having anything to do with the root causes of migration.
Instead the coverage focused on Harris’ tanking in the interview with Holt.
That’s bad news for Democrats who do not want any attention on the crisis at the border.
Polls shows Americans give Joe Biden his lowest marks on handling immigration.
The more time Democrats spend fending off questions and attacks on illegal immigration the harder it will be to move Joe Biden’s agenda through Congress.
.@LesterHoltNBC pushes Harris on the border including why she hasn’t visited.
Harris: "We've been the border."
Holt: "YOU haven't been to the border."
Harris: "…..and I haven't been to Europe. I don't understand the point you're making."
