Joe Biden handed Kamala Harris the biggest responsibility of her life.
Almost immediately the bad news poured in.
Kamala Harris just got hit with a humiliating rebuke from the last person she expected.
Biden put Kamala Harris in charge of muscling the Democrats’ federal takeover of elections—what Republicans call the “Corrupt Politicians Act”—into law.
The legislation would eviscerate voter ID laws as well as mandate universal mail-in ballots and ballot harvesting schemes in all 50 states.
Republicans argue this risky scheme would invite widespread voter fraud and rig every election in the Democrats’ favor.
Democrats’ only chance to pass this massive voter fraud scheme is to trigger the nuclear option and eliminate the legislative filibuster.
But that would require all 50 Democrat senators to vote to wipe out the filibuster.
West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin’s on record saying he won’t vote to nuke the filibuster.
Arizona Democrat Senator Kyrsten Sinema joined him by authoring a Washington Post op-ed saying she will not vote to eliminate the filibuster under any circumstances.
“It’s no secret that I oppose eliminating the Senate’s 60-vote threshold. I held the same view during three terms in the U.S. House, and said the same after I was elected to the Senate in 2018. If anyone expected me to reverse my position because my party now controls the Senate, they should know that my approach to legislating in Congress is the same whether in the minority or majority,” Sinema wrote.
Sinema explained that the filibuster was an important check on the tyranny of the majority.
“My support for retaining the 60-vote threshold is not based on the importance of any particular policy. It is based on what is best for our democracy. The filibuster compels moderation and helps protect the country from wild swings between opposing policy poles,”
Sinema added that gutting the filibuster would lead to wild swings in policy and that Democrats would regret doing away with the filibuster and a newly empowered Republican Senate majority undid the entire Democrat agenda on a simple party line vote.
“And to those who fear that Senate rules will change anyway as soon as the Senate majority changes: I will not support an action that damages our democracy because someone else did so previously or might do so in the future. I do not accept a new standard by which important legislation can only pass on party-line votes — and when my party is again in the Senate minority, I will work just as hard to preserve the right to shape legislation,” Sinema continued.
Joe Biden keeps handing Kamala Harris responsibilities like the border and the election takeover bill that are doomed to fail.
Biden doesn’t want the defeats associated with him so Harris is set up to take the fall.
