The Arizona gubernatorial election turned into one of the closest races in America.
Polls showed Republican Kari Lake in the lead but when the votes came in Democrat Katie Hobbs raced out to a double-digit lead.
But then Kari Lake got hit with this vote-counting stunner in the late hours of election night.
Arizona’s absurd, outdated and Third World-style election rules lead to insanely slow vote counting.
The early mail vote gets counted first followed by late-arriving mail and Election Day in-person voting.
This leads to a “blue mirage” where the Democrat races out to the lead thanks to the glut of mail-in voting Democrats train their voters to engage in.
But as the Election Day and late mail votes came in Lake narrowed the gap to just 11,000 votes.
Phoenix-based analytics firm Data Orbital posted on Twitter how massive vote dumps from Maricopa County cut into Hobbs’ lead:
Final Maricopa County update tonight (that represented the final 54k Election Day voters remaining) went to Lake by 41%. Results trending very strongly for Republicans heading into counting resuming Wednesday morning.
The latest Maricopa Drop of 136k Election Day voters showed @KariLake winning that update by 75%. That 50% advantage for Lake over Hobbs needed to be at 35%. Lake over performed in a major way.
The Election Day margin of 31% factors in about 32k from Maricopa that came from areas that lean towards Democrats (according to Recorders Office). Good sign for Republicans that heavy Republican areas in Maricopa have not been counted yet.
The following day on social media Lake predicted victory to her supporters as in Arizona the trend is the Election Day and late-arriving mail votes skew Republican.
Wow. We’re going to win big.
Stay tuned, Arizona!— Kari Lake (@KariLake) November 9, 2022
During the campaign Lake became public enemy number one in the eyes of the corporate media who turned her into the face of the “election deniers” running for office.
Lake supported Trump’s claim that there was fraud in the 2020 election and never backed down from that position.
Lake also pledged to declare an invasion at the southern border and use the National Guard to deport illegal aliens.
But the race proved surprisingly close even though polls showed Lake with a low single-digit lead over Hobbs.
A delayed vote count that took days brought back bad memories of 2020 for many Republicans.
However the vote drops showed Lake winning by a big enough margin that prediction markets reinstalled her as the favorite to win the election.
