Everyone in Washington and the media is trying to assess the fallout of Fox News firing Tucker Carlson.
Carlson’s next move is what viewers, pundits and politicians are trying to figure out.
Megyn Kelly made a prediction about Fox News firing Tucker Carlson that no one saw coming.
There was no shortage of opinions about what Fox News axing Carlson meant for both Carlson and the network.
Former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly was not shy about offering her thoughts on Fox News canning Carlson, calling it a “terrible move,” and predicting it would be the best thing for Carlson’s long-term prospects.
“This is a terrible move by Fox, and it’s a great thing for Tucker Carlson,” Kelly told listeners on her radio show.
Kelly — however — would not touch speculating on why Fox News finally decided to cut ties with Carlson.
“I don’t know what drove Fox News to make this decision. And it was clearly Fox News’ decision because they’re not letting him say goodbye,” Kelly continued. “That’s my supposition. That’s not inside knowledge. … Talk about misjudging your audience yet again.”
Kelly expanded on her prediction about her thoughts on Carlson growing his political power and influence even without his Fox News platform during an interview with NewsNation’s Dan Abrams.
Megyn Kelly admitted Fox News is going to take a short-term ratings hit as Carlson’s audience is very loyal and would follow Carlson wherever he went next.
However, Kelly guessed that Fox News would make out fine in the long term.
“Fox is going to take a hit tonight and this week and short term for sure. Its audience is very, very angry,” Kelly added. “I will say, the names you just mentioned, those departures prove there’s a huge audience out there that’s loyal to Fox, likes the Fox News graphics, the Fox News reporters — that’s what they’re banking on.”
“They’ll go with Tucker, for sure,” Kelly predicted.
Kelly pointed to podcast host Joe Rogan — who operates independently and reaches more than 10 million listeners to his show — on how Carlson could leverage his brand to build a massive audience without corporate media infrastructure behind him.
“Tucker is going to have more success, more money and more influence in an independent lane. I mean look at Joe Rogan. His audience dwarfs anything that’s on cable news right now and Tucker could rival him,” Kelly continued. “So I think he’ll make more money in the independent lane and it’ll all go in his pocket as opposed to in Rupert (Murdoch’s).”
There is evidence that Tucker Carlson’s audience will find him on alternative platforms.
Carlson built the largest audience in the age 25-54 demographic.
And the first night Carlson was off the air, ratings for his program plunged 19 percent.
If Carlson strikes out on his own with a video streaming or podcasting platform Carlson’s audience will seek him out on the various platforms that are available in today’s marketplace.
