The fate of Donald Trump’s pick to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg rested in Mitt Romney’s hands.
Republicans never want to count on the founding father of the Never Trump movement.
And Mitt Romney stunned President Trump with this announcement about a Supreme Court vote.
Romney tweeted out a statement saying he intended to allow a vote to proceed on President Trump’s Supreme Court nominee.
That gave Republicans 51 votes to confirm the eventual selection.
“The Constitution gives the president the power to nominate and the Senate the authority to provide advice and consent on Supreme Court nominees,” Romney stated. “I intend to follow the Constitution and precedent in considering the president’s nominee.”
But in typical Romney fashion, he lied about why he was supporting President Trump’s pick.
And it had nothing to do with conservative principle.
In a gathering with reporters, Romney compared the Republican Senate confirming President Trump’s pick to 2016 when the GOP-run Senate blocked Obama’s nominee and noted that a Senate run by a different party than the President usually rejected Supreme Court nominations.
“I think at this stage it’s appropriate to look at the Constitution and to look at the precedent which has existed since the beginning of our country’s history. In the circumstance where a nominee of a president is from a different party than the Senate then, more often than not, the Senate does not confirm. So the Garland decision was consistent with that,” Romney claimed.
Romney added that the same party held the Senate and the White House in 2020.
“On the other hand when there’s a nominee of a party that is in the same party as the Senate, then typically they do confirm. So the Garland decision was consistent with that. And the decision to proceed now with President Trump’s nominee is also consistent with history. I came down on the side of the institution and precedent as I’ve studied it. And made the decision on that basis,” Romney added.
This was all window dressing and a lie.
Romney is supporting President Trump’s Supreme Court pick because Romney is rooting for Donald Trump to lose the election.
If anyone has any doubt that is the case, all one needs to do is look at the fact that Romney stabbed Republican voters in the back and voted to convict President Trump on one of the Democrats’ sham articles of impeachment.
To maintain influence in a post-Trump Republican Party, Romney had to support the President’s Supreme Court picks.
Romney wants to seize back control of the GOP from the anti-establishment conservatives and populists that delivered Trump the Presidency so the donor class and swamp Republicans can go back to pushing open borders, amnesty, globalist trade deals and endless foreign wars.
And if Romney voted against President Trump’s nominee to replace Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Republican voters would turn on him by supporting a primary challenger when Romney runs for re-election in 2024.
