House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is in big trouble.
Pelosi pushed the impeachment witch hunt and now the walls are closing in.
And Nancy Pelosi just got hit with this ultimatum that will seal her career’s doom.
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi is scrambling to avoid absolute humiliation in the impeachment witch hunt.
Polls show Americans turning against impeachment and Donald Trump tied or leading Democrats in the battleground states that will decide the 2020 Presidential Election.
That’s because voters realize the Democrats’ impeachment case is pathetically weak and an exercise to try and eject a President from office for no other reason than simple partisan hatred and the fact that the Senate will exonerate the President on a bipartisan vote.
Pelosi’s last-ditch gambit to tip the scales of a Senate trial in the Democrats’ favor is to withhold articles of impeachment and delay a trial to try and blackmail Republicans into caving in to the Democrats’ demands for additional witnesses and documents.
“The House cannot choose our impeachment managers until we know what sort of trial the Senate will conduct,” Pelosi wrote on social media. “President Trump blocked his own witnesses and documents from the House, and from the American people, on phony complaints about the House process. What is his excuse now?”
But in reality, this is really no threat at all.
First of all, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell would be happy to never have to deal with impeachment at all.
Second of all, an impeachment trial is not a legal proceeding.
The Senate sets its own rules and procedures.
Senate Judiciary Committee Chairman Lindsey Graham made that clear in a tweet where he threatened Republicans would take matters into their own hands if Pelosi continued to delay sending articles of impeachment to the Senate.
“It’s time for @SpeakerPelosi, who claimed impeachment was a national imperative, to fish or cut bait.” Graham wrote. “Commit to sending the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate consistent with Constitutional obligations.”
Graham publicly stated he considers the Democrats’ impeachment case a joke and that he will do whatever he had to make this farce die a quick death in the Senate.
Lindsey Graham was not on an island in threatening to put an end to impeachment and exonerate the President even if the Democrats refused to send over articles of impeachment to try and delay a trial.
Missouri Republican Roy Blunt – who is about as much of an establishment squish as one can find – declared that if Democrats continue to play games, 51 Republicans would vote to start a trial and then move to acquit the President.
“Once we’re sworn in, that 51 of us could adopt the rules for [Clinton’s trial] that would still apply,” Sen. Roy Blunt (R-Mo.) said on Monday. “We don’t want to do it that way. Hopefully it won’t happen.”
Current Senate rules state an impeachment trial cannot start until the House sends over articles of impeachment.
But that is not a constitutionally mandated requirement.
That is a Senate rule and if 51 Republicans want to change it to allow a trial to start without the articles the majority can work its will.
Republicans are putting Pelosi on notice that her empty threats are doomed to failure.
