Nancy Pelosi thought she secured a massive victory.
Instead, the agreement may wreck Joe Biden’s agenda.
And Nancy Pelosi just cut one deal that will end Joe Biden’s presidency.
Nancy Pelosi and ten moderate Democrats led by New Jersey Democrat Josh Gottheimer reached an agreement to support a rule advancing a 3.5-trillion-dollar socialist spending bill drafted by Bernie Sanders.
Sanders’ budget will impose the Green New Deal and massive socialist welfare programs on the American economy.
But to win moderate Democrats’ support for the rule that will allow the House of Representatives to vote on the Sanders budget, Pelosi agreed to hold a vote on a 1.2-trillion-dollar fake infrastructure bill that serves as a down payment on the Sanders bill by September 27.
Pelosi originally intended to link the two spending bills to force both moderates and leftists to vote for both bills even though they each opposed one of them.
But Pelosi acquiesced to the moderates’ demands because the ten Democrats represented enough votes to tank the rule if it came up for a vote which would have signaled a humiliating defeat for Pelosi.
After announcing the deal, Pelosi celebrated it as a major victory for the Biden agenda.
“I am committing to pass the bipartisan infrastructure bill by September 27. I do so with a commitment to rally House Democratic support for its passage,” Pelosi declared. “We must keep the 51-vote privilege by passing the budget and work with House and Senate Democrats to reach agreement in order for the House to vote on a Build Back Better Act that will pass the Senate.”
The ten moderate Democrats declared victory.
“This is a big win for America and will help get people to work and shovels in the ground,” the ten Democrats wrote in a statement. “We have established a path forward that ensures we can pass this once-in-a-century infrastructure investment by September 27th, allowing us to create millions of jobs and bring our nation into the 21st century.”
But Pelosi and the moderates’ joy ended up being short-lived.
As soon as the moderates cut the deal with Pelosi the advantage shifted to the socialists led by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.
Ocasio-Cortez declared that if Pelosi stuck to her timeline of holding a vote on the 1.2-trillion-dollar bill on September 27 and a vote on the 3.5-trillion-dollar Sanders budget later on down the road, Ocasio-Cortez and her allies would kill the 1.2-trillion-dollar spending bill by voting against it.
“If that is not the case then they shouldn’t count on us,” Ocasio-Cortez stated.
Ocasio-Cortez and her allies fear that once the moderates vote for the 1.2-trillion-dollar Green New Deal down payment bill, they will oppose the 3.5-trillion-dollar socialist spending bill out of fear of the political fallout.
That’s why Pelosi initially linked the two bills.
And while the press celebrated Pelosi’s agreement with the moderates as a master stroke, it may have increased the chances of blowing up the last best chance to pass Joe Biden’s big government agenda.
If both these bills go down in flames because Pelosi could not balance the needs of her caucus, it would signal the death knell of Joe Biden’s legislative agenda.
And that – combined with the inflation, illegal immigration, and Afghanistan crises – would brand Joe Biden as a failed president overwhelmed by events.
