Donald Trump could not believe Nancy Pelosi was willing to go there.
The Speaker of the House is determined to end the Trump Presidency by any means necessary.
And Nancy Pelosi just sent Donald Trump this letter containing some really bad news.
Nancy Pelosi is dangling the State of the Union speech as a bargaining chip in the government shutdown fight.
Pelosi figured depriving Trump of the high-profile televised appearance would force him to cave in on his demand that Congress provide five billion dollars in funding for his proposed border wall.
The Speaker recently sent Trump a letter urging him to consider a different date for the State of the Union address instead of the originally agreed upon January 29th.
Pelosi falsely claimed that because of the shutdown, the Secret Service could not secure the House chamber for the speech.
Trump called her bluff and sent his own letter informing Pelosi that he intended to deliver the State of the Union in accordance with Pelosi’s invitation for the 29th.
“Thank you for your letter of January 3, 2019, sent to me long after the Shutdown began, inviting me to address the Nation on January 29th as to the State of the Union,” the President wrote to Pelosi.
“As you know, I had already accepted your kind invitation, however, I then received another letter from you dated January 16, 2019, wherein you expressed concerns regarding security during the State of the Union Address due to the Shutdown.”
The President forced Pelosi to play the heavy and cancel the speech.
That’s because although Trump has every right to enter the House chamber whenever he wants, Pelosi controls who speaks from the floor.
Pelosi responded by taking the bait.
The Speaker of the House fired off a letter informing the President that she was banning him from delivering the State of the Union speech from the House floor.
“I regret to inform you that the House of Representatives will not consider a concurrent resolution authorizing the President’s State of the Union in the House chamber until the government is reopened,” Pelosi wrote. “Again, I look forward to welcoming you to the House on mutually agreeable date for this address when the government is reopened.”
Pelosi’s letter was another lie.
She sent Trump the invitation to deliver the State of the Union on January 3rd.
The government was shut down at that time.
Pelosi figured Trump would have folded long before January 29.
But because Trump held his ground, Pelosi had to lie and say that the President cannot fulfill his Constitutional duty to deliver the State of the Union address because of the government shutdown.
Trump responded to Pelosi’s stunt with a tinge of sadness.
The President told reporters he regretted the fact that Pelosi succumbed to the radical fringe base of the Democrat Party by engaging in childish stunts and taunts.
“I’m not surprised. It’s really a shame what’s happening with the Democrats. They’ve become radicalized. They don’t want to see crime stopped, which we can easily do on the southern border… This will go on for a while,” Trump told the media.
By canceling the State of the Union, Pelosi is showing the American people this is not about any policy fight.
This shutdown is an attempt to embarrass Donald Trump personally.
And it could turn around the public polling on this stalemate.
