Democrats were in for a nasty surprise.
Their attempt to convict Donald Trump on an article of impeachment accusing Trump of inciting the January 6 riot at the Capitol imploded before it even began.
And that’s because Nancy Pelosi received this letter that just destroyed her impeachment case against Donald Trump.
On February 1,former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund wrote a letter to House Speaker Nancy Pelosi detailing his recollection of the events leading up to, during and after the January 6 riot at the Capitol where Trump supporters disrupted a joint session of Congress to certify the Electoral College results.
Several details in Sund’s letter undercut the Democrats’ argument that Donald Trump incited the riot.
Sund detailed how he approached both the House and Senate Sergeant at Arms to request National Guard troops at the Capitol on January 6 based on reports that some groups developed plans to stage a violent attack.
“On Monday, January 4, I approached the two Sergeants at Arms to request the assistance of the National Guard, as I had no authority to do so without an Emergency Declaration by the Capitol Police Board,” Sund wrote.
Sund explained that the House Sergeant at Arms rejected the request disputing the intelligence about a possible attack and expressing concern about the “optics” of armed troops protecting the Capitol during a political rally.
“I first spoke with the House Sergeant at Arms to request the National Guard. Mr. Irving stated that he was concerned about the ‘optics’ and didn’t feel that the intelligence supported it,” Sund stated.
Sund added that the Senate Sergeant at Arms also turned down his request.
In the letter to Pelosi, Sund also described the tactics and conduct of the rioters as they began to attack officers outside the Capitol in order to force their way into the building.
Sund wrote that previous Trump protests were 100 percent peaceful, but the crowd that gathered to riot was a different group of Trump supporters than he ever encountered and that they showed up with mayhem on their minds.
“When the group arrived at the perimeter, they did not act like any group of protestors I had ever seen. Unlike other heated protests, these protesters did not simply congregate to angrily voice their grievances. As soon as this group arrived at our perimeter, they immediately began to fight violently with the officers and to tear apart the steel crowd control barriers, using them to assault the officers,” Sund continued.
Sund described a well-organized battalion of rioters executing a well thought out plan to lay siege to the Capitol.
“It was immediately clear that their primary goal was to defeat our perimeter as quickly as possible and to get past the police line. This mob was like nothing I have seen in my law enforcement career. The group consisted of thousands of well-coordinated, well-equipped violent criminals. They had weapons, chemical munitions, protective equipment, explosives, and climbing gear. A number of them were wearing radio ear pieces indicating a high level of coordination,” Sund recounted.
Sund did not describe a spontaneous insurrection that erupted in the passions of the moment inspired by Donald Trump’s speech.
Instead, this letter lined up with subsequent reporting describing a riot that violent groups planned well in advance of Trump’s speech.
If the riot was coordinated in advance then by definition Donald Trump could not have incited the melee.
Sund’s letter is the latest piece of evidence that Trump supporters point to that bolsters their case that the Democrats’ article of impeachment is nothing more than partisan score settling.
