Nancy Pelosi was facing one of her biggest tests as Speaker of the House.
The results were bad news for Democrats.
And Nancy Pelosi just suffered this humiliating defeat that sent one big signal about her future.
Primary elections often turn into proxy battles that point toward which faction of a political party is ascendant.
That is exactly what happened in Massachusetts’ Senate primary where incumbent Ed Markey defeated Congressman Joe Kennedy III 54 to 46.
Normally a Kennedy losing an election in Massachusetts – where the family was 26 for 26 dating back to Jack Kennedy’s run for Congress in 1946 – would be the major news.
But the real story was the fact that socialists like Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – who endorsed Markey – won a head-on fight against Nancy Pelosi – who publicly backed Kennedy.
Markey bragged that the coalition Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren tried to put together in the presidential race – young voters and highly educated professionals – proved dominant over the Joe Biden coalition of blacks and working class whites that Joe Kennedy tried to recreate.
“Tonight is more than just a celebration of a movement,” Markey exclaimed. “It is a reaffirmation of the need to have a movement, a progressive movement, of young people demanding radical change, demanding justice. A movement giving voice and power to young people when for far too long they were ignored.”
For his part, Kennedy conceded defeat on primary night, a feeling no Kennedy ever experienced before.
“The senator is a good man. You have never heard me say otherwise,” Kennedy stated. “It was difficult at times between us. Good elections often get heated. But I’m grateful for the debates, for his commitment to our commonwealth and for the energy and enthusiasm that he brought to this race.”
President Trump used Markey’s win – which was powered by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez’s endorsement following Markey’s support for the 93 trillion-dollar Green New Deal – as evidence that if Biden was President, he too would not be able to hold off the socialists in Congress from running wild and would act as their puppet.
“When a Kennedy loses a Democrat Primary in Massachusetts, by a lot, it just shows how far LEFT that party has gone. Joe Biden will never be able to hold them back. Life, 2nd A, Energy, Religion, Jobs and the Economy, would be totally obliterated!” Trump posted on social media in reaction to Pelosi’s humiliating defeat in backing Kennedy.
Joe Biden has repeatedly claimed he could stand up to the radical left in Congress.
But Biden’s agreed to a so-called “unity” platform with Bernie Sanders that even Sanders boasts is farther left than he could have hoped for.
Markey’s win – powered by Ocasio-Cortez’s support – will send a message to Pelosi and other Congressional Democrats that if they want to keep their seats in the 2022 primary season, they better endorse socialism.
