The post-election period has seen multiple changes at Fox News Channel.
Fox News fell to last place in the ratings chase after viewers thought the network turned against President Trump.
And no one saw Fox News canceling this popular Trump-supporting host coming.
Pro-Trump host Lou Dobbs was the top-rated host on the Fox Business Channel.
Dobbs is now an ex-Fox News host as the network announced it canceled his 5PM show effective immediately.
“Fox News Media regularly considers programming changes, and plans have been in place to launch new formats as appropriate post-election, including on Fox Business,” a Fox News Channel statement announcing the move read. “This is part of those planned changes. A new 5 p.m. program will be announced in the near future.”
President Trump praised Dobbs in a statement immediately after Fox yanked Dobbs off the air.
“Lou Dobbs is and was great. Nobody loves America more than Lou. He had a large and loyal following that will be watching closely for his next move, and that following includes me,” President Trump’s statement read.
Dobbs became a figure of great controversy after the election.
On his show, Dobbs became one of the leading cheerleaders for President Trump’s claims the election was stolen through massive voter fraud.
Dobbs claimed President Trump needed to take “drastic action, dramatic action to make certain that the integrity of this election is understood or lack of it, the crimes that have been committed against him and the American people. And if the Justice Department doesn’t want to do it, if the FBI cannot do it, then we have to find other resources within the federal government.”
Smartmatic also named Dobbs as part of a $2.7 billion lawsuit against Fox News and other Trump allies for repeating the claim that deceased Venezuelan dictator Hugo Chavez played a role in the company’s founding and created its voting machine software vulnerable to hacks.
Fox stressed that Dobbs’ firing was not related to the Smartmatic lawsuit.
Dobbs’ replacement will, for the time being, be a rotating cast of guest hosts.
But the strong likelihood is that Fox will replace Dobbs with an equally pro-Trump opinion host.
That’s because Fox understands that it lost 40 percent of its audience post-Election Day as some Trump supporters thought Fox abandoned the President.
Some Trump supporters will undoubtedly think Fox canceling Dobbs is another move to turn Fox into CNN-lite.
Dating back to his days on CNN in the early to mid-2000s, Lou Dobbs was a powerful advocate for the policy agenda that eventually became “MAGA.”
Dobbs strongly opposed illegal immigration, trade deals and foreign wars.
Fox will now be under pressure to find a host that echoes Dobbs’ support for the Trump agenda in order to maintain Dobbs’ audience.
