Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is perhaps the most famous Democrat in America now.
With a social media following that numbers in the millions, many are painting the New York socialist as the future face of the party.
But she’s in for a nasty surprise from someone she least expected.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is seeing one of the most stellar rises in the history of American politics.
After shocking an establishment Democratic Congressman in the 2018 primary cycle, Ocasio-Cortez stormed into Washington and almost overnight became a household name across the country.
Billing herself as a “Democratic Socialist”, Ocasio-Cortez has positioned herself to the far-left of any other notable member of Congress, save perhaps for Senator Bernie Sanders.
Her fame and popularity however, has led to her gaining many enemies during her month-long tenure in Congress so far.
And not all of these enemies are Republicans.
Breitbart reports, “Several New York “furious” Democrats have mulled whether they want to primary challenge Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) and make her a “one-term congressperson,” according to report released on Tuesday.”
Apparently, establishment Democrats in Washington have run out of patience with the upstart Ocasio-Cortez.
Primarying her would be a serious challenge, as the socialist has a social media following that rivals even President Trump, and she has the potential to raise a substantial amount of money from small dollar donations.
However, Ocasio-Cortez should never underestimate the power and influence Nancy Pelosi wields in Democratic circles.
If she wants Ocasio-Cortez out of office, she can most likely work to make sure that happens.
For her part, Ocasio-Cortez slammed the allegations.
“That broken mentality, that public office is something you wait in line for, instead of earning through hard organizing, is exactly what voters want to change. Shows you how disconnected some folks here are,” tweeted the New York Democrat.
Democrats seem to be shy discussing the topic in public.
“We are going to see what happens. Generally for me, I’m giving folks the benefit of the doubt, the presumption of innocence,” said New York Democratic Congressman Gregory Meeks.
“You might say one thing before you get in here, and then after you get to meet folks, you see what happens and how the body works … things are different, so we’ll see what happens.”
Ocasio-Cortez’s team have recently said they would welcome a primary challenge, arguing that the socialist can best any establishment Democrats who line up to run against her.
It’s not clear if Democrats even have a candidate to run against Ocasio-Cortez yet.
But with the 2020 elections still nearly two years away, there’s still plenty of time to recruit one.
However, the fact that Ocasio-Cortez has incurred the wrath of so many long-time Democratic members of Congress after less than a month in D.C. suggests that her standing within the party leadership may only get worse.
Do you think Democrats will try to primary Ocasio-Cortez in 2020? If so, will she hold onto her seat?
