Newly-elected Congresswoman Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY) just revealed the latest details of her socialist agenda for 2019.
And the plan is unbelievable.
The amount of money she expects Americans to fork over for the government to fund her plans will leave you speechless.
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez is perhaps America’s best-known socialist (aside from Bernie Sanders).
Having been elected to Congress last November, the Democrat just took office this past week and has now settled into her role as a member of Congress.
Her signature policy proposal is now being worked on, and Ocasio-Cortez just announced a new batch of details to pay for it.
Hailed as the “Green New Deal”, Ocasio-Cortez wants to bring about the greatest government intervention in the lives of ordinary Americans since FDR.
And when asked by 60 Minutes’ Anderson Cooper about her plans to pay for the “Green New Deal”, Ocasio-Cortez said something which will leave every American speechless.
“But once you get to the tippie tops, on your $10 millionth, sometimes you see tax rates as high as 60% or 70%. That doesn’t mean all $10 million are taxed at an extremely high rate. But it means that as you climb up this ladder, you should be contributing more.”
Ocasio-Cortez sometimes speaks with her head in the clouds.
To dissect what she means by this, the New York socialist is suggesting to set up a 70% income tax.
Cooper called this idea a “radical agenda”, which is about the mildest way anyone could put this.
But that didn’t deter Ocasio-Cortez, who kept to her guns.
“If that’s what radical means, call me a radical,” she said.
Now, Ocasio-Cortez will claim that her plan only raises income taxes to 70% for the “richest” Americans who “don’t pay their fair share”.
But this argument has been used before.
Every time Washington raises taxes on “the rich”, the results usually end up that middle and lower-income Americans also pay more as well.
And with a 70% top tax rate, the sky is the limit for how high of a tax rate Ocasio-Cortez plans to raise for the American people.
Of course, it’s unclear what exactly will be the final details in her “Green New Deal”.
The plan has so little specifics at this point that it can hardly even be called a plan.
But that’s not the point to the New York socialist.
It’s not about building a plan that requires larger tax rates, it’s about demanding more in taxes and then finding a reason to justify it.
Whether her plan even gets off the drawing table is another matter.
With Republicans in control of the Senate and Presidency, it’s unlikely Ocasio-Cortez will get her wish of a 70% tax rate.
But with the 2020 elections set to determine control of the Senate, House, and presidency, her plan may serve as a blueprint to something more concrete should Democrats retake unified control of the government for the first time since 2008.
