Former South Bend Mayor Pete Buttigieg was the surprise winner of the Iowa Caucus and ran a strong second in New Hampshire.
But as the primary may expand, Buttigieg is watching his campaign slowly lose altitude.
In a desperate attempt to get back into contention, Pete Buttigieg issued this challenge to Rush Limbaugh. And it instantly backfired.
After Pete Buttigieg surprised the political world in Iowa, many pundits began trying to game out how the former 38-year-old South Bend Mayor would fare in a match up with Donald Trump.
In analyzing the race, it was impossible to avoid Buttigieg’s homosexual lifestyle.
Buttigieg’s homosexuality even became an issue in Iowa when a Buttigieg caucus-goer demanded she get her vote back after she found out Buttigieg was an open homosexual.
During a recent broadcast of his radio program Rush Limbaugh asked his audience to imagine how voters would picture Buttigieg kissing his husband on stage as compared to Donald Trump.
“Thirty-seven-year-old gay guy kissing his husband on stage, next to Mr. Man, Donald Trump,” Limbaugh declared. “What’s going to happen here?”
Buttigieg is not polling as well in Nevada and South Carolina where more socially conservative black and Latino voters are more skeptical of Buttigieg’s homosexuality.
So Buttigieg seized on Limbaugh’s comments to falsely claim Limbaugh was attacking him for being gay in a bid to establish victim class status in the minds of Democrat voters.
“I love my husband, I am faithful to my husband. On stage, we usually just go for a hug, but I love him very much,” Buttigieg told fake news CNN. “And I am not going to take lectures on family values from the likes of Rush Limbaugh.”
During a subsequent broadcast Limbaugh said President Trump encouraged him not to apologize.
Limbaugh also stated for the record that he was only engaging in analysis of how voters would see Buttigieg and that he was not attacking Buttigieg for being a homosexual.
“I didn’t lecture anybody on family values. I would not do so on this program. I simply was engaging in political analysis that is politically incorrect as far as the left is concerned. You simply are not — a conservative is not — permitted to identify a gay candidate as gay. These people need to be thanking me. Mayor Pete is on the map because of me — and himself, of course, obviously. But he’s on the map because of me,” Limbaugh explained.
But Rush will have the last laugh.
Despite Buttigieg trying to use Limbaugh as a political prop to boost his campaign, the former South Bend Mayor is failing to build momentum.
Part of the reason is former New York City Mayor Mike Bloomberg is crowding out Buttigieg’s air space with $400 million dollars in TV ads.
But Buttigieg is also failing to gain traction because Democrat voters are worried Buttigieg’s only real selling point is an identity politics appeal of being a homosexual millennial that represents generational change.
And that – many Democrats concede – will not be enough to defeat Donald Trump.
