Paul Ryan and other swamp Republicans are desperate to move on from Donald Trump.
They have fought the President’s Make America Great Again agenda and believed victory was in sight.
But one brand new poll was bad news for Ryan and the Republican establishment.
Ryan and other Republican elites are open-border globalists.
They believe in flooding America with cheap foreign labor so their donors can drive down wages of everyday American workers.
Their loyalty is to the big money elites and not their own constituents.
To further their pro-illegal immigration agenda, Ryan has not lifted a finger to fight for funding for Trump’s border wall, nor has he kept his promise to bring a Trump-supported immigration bill that would curb immigration levels.
But Trump’s brand of nationalist conservatism is more popular than Ryan’s donor class Republicanism.
A new Harvard-Harris poll found Republican voters placed reducing immigration levels above tax cuts and repealing Obamacare.
“Republican voters say reducing overall immigration to the U.S. is more important than tax cuts or repealing and replacing Obamacare.
It is considered the most important issue facing the country, along with terrorism and national security, making it vastly more important than taxes and the national debt.
Although House Speaker Paul Ryan’s brand of Republicanism has focused largely on talking up the benefits of tax reform and cutting entitlements to reduce the national debt, GOP voters see immigration and national security — which is directly tied to immigration — as their biggest issues.
In a new Harvard-Harris poll, 42 percent of Republican voters said immigration was the most important issue facing the country. The same amount of Republicans said national security, too, is the most important issue.
Meanwhile, only 25 percent of Republican voters said the national debt was the biggest issue in the country, while only 12 percent of Republicans said the same of taxes.
Reducing immigration was a bigger priority for GOP voters than tax cuts, repealing Obamacare, getting the U.S. out of the Iran Deal, destroying ISIS, and expanding family leave.”
Republican elites have tried to pretend that Trump is just a fad.
They contend that voters were drawn to his personality and not his policies.
And they predict that once Trump leaves the stage, the GOP will revert back to the days of Mitt Romney and John McCain.
But this poll showed why Trump won.
He is President because his agenda is what the American people want to see Washington enact.
