Donald Trump may be in trouble in 2020.
As he prepares to seek a second four-year term in the White House next year, a new poll shows that the race may be closer than the Trump campaign wishes.
And this shock poll should set off alarm bells in Trump’s campaign headquarters.
President Donald Trump’s re-election campaign is already off and running.
But as the Republican incumbent prepares to seek another term in office, some bad news just struck the Trump campaign that no one was expecting.
The race may ultimately be far closer than Trump wishes, and one major state that has formed the backbone of every Republican victory in the electoral college for generations is now apparently in danger of flipping to the Democrats.
The Daily Caller reports, “Democratic 2020 presidential candidates Bernie Sanders, Beto O’Rourke and Joe Biden are all polling within two points of President Donald Trump in the deep-red state of Texas.”
Texas is the second largest state in the Union, with the second most electoral votes aside from California.
It is the largest Republican state in the country, as California is traditionally viewed to be a safe Democrat state.
Texas’ importance to any Republican presidential candidate cannot be understated. Had President Trump not carried the state in 2016, he would have lost the election even while carrying several major states in the Midwest that he flipped from supporting Barack Obama just four years before.
If the Democrats managed to win Texas in 2020, there is effectively zero path for Donald Trump to win re-election.
And any Democratic victory in Texas could signal the collapse of the entire Republican electoral map, forcing the party to try and flip other states that have traditionally voted Democrat.
“The Emerson College poll released Monday reveals that if the general election were held today, Biden would lead Trump 50-49, O’Rourke would tie the president, and Sanders would trail Trump by two percentage points,” reports the Daily Caller.
The Texas poll also may give an indication of which Democratic primary candidate will square off against President Trump in the general election.
“Biden led the poll covering the party primary, earning 23%. O’Rourke came in second at 22%, and Sanders brought up third with 17% support among respondents,” adds the Daily Caller.
“That’s a lightning-strike poll,” former Clinton Advisor Garry Mauro told The Statesman. “The big picture, the main takeaway, is that what we saw in the 2018 Senate race continues. Texas really is a 50-50 state.”
Trump won Texas by 9 points against former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in 2016, but that victory was significantly down from Mitt Romney’s performance against then-President Barack Obama in 2012. Despite losing the election that year, Romney carried Texas by 16 points.
Democrats have tried to flip Texas before however, most notably in the 2018 election when Democratic Congressman Beto O’Rourke challenged Senator Ted Cruz, losing Texas by a narrow margin while spending a record 80 million dollars in the process.
