Rachel Maddow is queen of liberal cable news.
But that is all about to change.
That’s because Rachel Maddow just gave this huge update on quitting her show.
Rachel Maddow returned from a two-month hiatus to tell her MSNBC viewers that beginning in May, Maddow would no longer host her show five nights a week.
Instead, Maddow would only host the show on Monday nights except for special occasions and the weeks before an election.
“I’m gonna be here all this month Monday through Thursday nights,” Maddow explained to her audience. “Now for big news events, for things like the lead up to the election I will, of course, be here more than that but that is the general plan … then starting in May I’m going to be here weekly. I’m going to be here on Monday nights just to give myself more time to work on some of this other stuff I’ve got cooking for MSNBC and NBC.”
This move was long rumored.
Last August Maddow signed a new monster contract with MSNBC that would allow her to produce films and other streaming projects on NBC’s Peacock platform.
The Wall Street Journal exclusively reported:
The deal, which closed on Friday, expands the scope of Ms. Maddow’s portfolio at NBCUniversal, giving her the freedom to pursue a range of formats including film and TV series, according to a person familiar with the matter. Ms. Maddow is starting her own production company that will bring its potential projects to NBCUniversal first, the person said.
Ms. Maddow will develop a variety of projects in a new partnership with NBCUniversal, the people said, though the details are still being finalized. Those projects are likely to include some combination of streaming specials and documentaries for Peacock, NBCUniversal’s streaming service, one of the people said.
Rachel Maddow is the only MSNBC host to draw more than two million viewers.
Maddow built a massive audience on the back of the Russian collusion hoax.
Beginning in 2017 there was not a conspiracy theory involving Donald Trump and Russia too deranged or far-fetched that Maddow would not air.
Maddow fed liberals furious that Trump won the election the opiates they needed to believe the falsehood that Donald Trump did not legitimately win the 2016 election.
Maddow indulging the Russian collusion hoax actually propelled her to attract more than three million viewers and displaced Tucker Carlson and Sean Hannity as the number one rated host in cable news.
That sugar high ended with the Mueller report and a chunk of Maddow’s audience left after realizing that Maddow lied to them.
MSNBC now faces a massive dilemma.
The week before Maddow returned to the air the five shows featuring guest hosts averaged just 1.3 million viewers, a 40 percent decrease from Maddow’s final full week as host before Maddow went on hiatus.
Without their biggest star, MSNBC could see their primetime lineup fall off a cliff like CNN’s did.
