The Senate impeachment trial of President Trump is set to begin next Tuesday.
Everyone expected a trial to end with Donald Trump’s acquittal.
But Republicans just blindsided Trump with one big impeachment double-cross.
Over the weekend, President Trump expressed his desire for the Senate not to even have a trial and immediately vote to dismiss the Democrats’ phony articles of impeachment right off the bat.
“Many believe that by the Senate giving credence to a trial based on the no evidence, no crime, read the transcripts, ‘no pressure’ Impeachment Hoax, rather than an outright dismissal, it gives the partisan Democrat Witch Hunt credibility that it otherwise does not have. I agree!” President Trump tweeted.
President Trump and his supporters know the Democrats’ case is pathetic and they have no facts or evidence to back up their charges.
Critics of impeachment point to the fact that Nancy Pelosi withheld the articles for nearly one month after claiming impeachment was so urgent that Democrats in the House needed to rush through the process and now wait for court cases to resolve claims of privilege that blocked some witness testimony.
Democrats’ demands for new witnesses and documents also highlighted how flimsy the case is that the House Democrats built against the President.
If the Democrats’ charges against the President were as airtight as the fake news media claimed, then Chuck Schumer and Speaker Pelosi wouldn’t be staging partisan stunts to blackmail Republicans into allowing Senate Democrats to conduct a fishing expedition instead of a trial.
However, Senate Republicans do not see things this way.
Two prominent Republican Senators announced that the Senate would not dismiss the Democrats’ sham articles of impeachment.
Missouri Republican Roy Blunt – the number four ranking Senate Republican – stated Republicans did not have the 51 votes necessary to dismiss the articles of impeachment.
“I think our members generally are not interested in a motion to dismiss. … Certainly there aren’t 51 votes for a motion to dismiss,” Blunt stated.
Texas Senator John Cornyn – who as Majority Whip is the number two Republican in the Senate – also hinted there were not enough votes for dismissal.
“If 51 senators wanted to have that vote, we could have it at some point. I don’t believe it’s going to be baked into the underlying resolution,” Senator Cornyn told The Hill.
The President’s supporters suspect Never Trump traitor Mitt Romney is working behind the scenes to line up other RINO Senators like Lisa Murkowski, Susan Collins, Lamar Alexander and Pat Toomey to vote to convict the President.
That way, even if the Democrats fail to reach the 67 votes necessary to convict, a majority of Senators will have judged the President guilty.
Democrats and Never Trumpers want to deny the President the ability to say the Senate exonerated him.
And scuttling any chance to dismiss the ridiculous articles of impeachment right off the bat looks like step one in that process.
