Democrats are learning a hard lesson that they picked the wrong fight with Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Governor DeSantis is not some Mitt Romney-style RINO that rolls over and dies at the first sign of conflict with the left.
And now Ron DeSantis lowered the boom with the threat of a lawsuit that terrifies Democrats.
Governor DeSantis is one of the Republicans leading the fight against Big Tech’s ideologically motivated censorship of conservatives.
The latest front in the left’s war against free speech came when the Twitter board of directors injected a “poison pill” provision into Telsa CEO – and self-described free speech absolutist – Elon Musk’s attempt to purchase Twitter for $43 billion.
Musk said a free speech platform is essential for the survival of democracy.
Twitter’s woke board of directors panicked and hatched a scheme to flood the market with new shares of Twitter to prevent Musk from purchasing a majority.
But Twitter is a publicly traded company.
And states like Florida own shares of Twitter in their pension fund.
Musk’s offer of $54.20 per share of Twitter is currently greater than the company’s stock price of $46.16 meaning Twitter’s board of directors is acting against the interest of shareholders by denying them the chance to turn a profit on their investment by attempting to block a vote on Musk’s takeover bid.
Reporters asked Governor DeSantis if Florida would divest itself of its shares of Twitter.
DeSantis rejected that proposition on the grounds that owning shares afforded the state of Florida to sue arguing that Twitter’s board violated their fiduciary duty to shareholders by trying to reject Musk’s bid.
“If we did that, we would not have standing to hold the board of directors accountable,” DeSantis explained. “It gives us standing to do it.
“If the board is acting in ways that are breaching their fiduciary duty, if they’re doing it for reasons of power and politics, and basically to serve as a suppression arm of the government, well then you’re in a situation where, you know, you need some accountability there,” DeSantis added. “First of all, that’s not free market capitalism, when you have that, OK?”
DeSantis laid down a marker warning Silicon Valley overlords that there would be accountability for censoring Americans on the basis of their political views.
“That’s a ruling junta that’s using their policies to try to marginalize people that disagree with them,” DeSantis declared.
Governor DeSantis also blasted the meltdown in the corporate media over Musk buying Twitter where so-called “journalists” exposed themselves as demanding online censorship out of the fear that the American people would turn against or question whatever the liberal orthodoxy of the moment is.
“You notice the people that are the most hostile to Musk are people from like these legacy media outlets like Washington Post and CNN and all these places,” DeSantis concluded. “Nobody trusts these people anymore, I tell you they lie every single day.”
