Sean Hannity is a Fox News Channel original.
Hannity’s been one of the faces of the top-rated cable news network for more than two decades.
But now Sean Hannity just lost his spot at Fox News to this surprising person.
Last year Tucker Carlson dethroned Sean Hannity as the ratings king of Fox News.
But now Sean Hannity is no longer even in second place.
The big breakout star of Fox News in 2021 is Greg Gutfeld, who is the featured star of the popular show “The Five” which overtook Hannity for the second most-watched show on Fox News.
This past summer, “The Five” – thanks to Gutfeld’s star power – began drawing bigger ratings than Hannity.
And now “The Five” is nipping at Tucker Carlson’s heels.
The Daily Beast reports:
After being firmly ensconced in second place, The Five has come knocking at Tucker’s door. For the month of October, the panel show took first place—by a mere 30,000 viewers. And Hannity remained mired in a fairly distant third place.
Carlson reclaimed his lead in November with 3.7 million average viewers, but The Five followed closely behind with 3.5 million. Once again, Hannity finished several hundred thousand viewers behind the Gutfeld-led program.
After barely finishing on top in the first week of December, Carlson’s 8 p.m. show placed second the following two weeks to The Five, which averaged 3.38 million total viewers in one week, and then followed that up with 3.19 million the following week, just squeaking by Carlson’s 3.11 million. And as the month wrapped up, The Five barely reclaimed the ratings crown, pulling in a total audience of 3.34 million to Carlson’s 3.22 million.
Gutfeld is the centerpiece of the effort by Fox News executives to win back their audience.
Back in January, Fox News slipped to third place in the cable news ratings war as a segment as large as 30 percent of Fox’s audience abandoned the network.
Fox News viewers did not take kindly to Fox saying Joe Biden won the election and a chunk of the audience began sampling conservative competitors Newsmax and One America News Network.
In response, Fox News executives handed Gutfeld the 11 p.m. hour to host a comedy opinion show and elevated Gutfeld’s profile on “The Five.”
In that show Gutfeld’s attracted more viewers than left-wing comics like Stephen Colbert that host late-night pro-Democrat talk shows on broadcast networks such as CBS.
The pro-Trump Gutfeld earning a more prominent spot on Fox triggered a turnaround in ratings.
Fox News quickly won back its audience and Fox News Channel ended 2021 in the same spot in the ratings as they had for the previous 18 years – in first place.
