The NFL Commissioner and team owners all closed ranks around their anti-American players.
They expected a fawning media – which universally praises the players – to snuff out any fan revolt.
But the NFL and their players were stunned when their actions backfired in one major way.
Direct TV offers the NFL Sunday Ticket package which allows fans who live in other cities to watch their favorite teams play each week.
It’s a popular package which has boosted the league’s popularity and has turned fall Sundays into social gatherings as sports bars across the country welcome fans of every team to watch all the action.
But the fan backlash is now hitting Direct TV.
The company made an unprecedented announcement that they would give a full refund to fans offended by the anthem protests.
The Daily Wire reports:
“Sick of seeing privileged millionaire athletes disrespectfully take a knee during the playing of our national anthem before NFL games?
Don’t worry, you can tune them out and get your money back.
In an unprecedented move, DirecTV is now offering subscribers a cancellation and refund of the NFL Sunday Ticket package if the customer is unhappy with the national anthem protests sweeping the NFL, ESPN confirmed via a source.
“Once the season starts, fans usually cannot cancel their subscriptions, but AT&T, which owns DirecTV, decided to change the policy due to the sensitivity of the issue. The price of the package, which allows fans to get out-of-market games, is about $280,” reports ESPN.”
This move came after Trump tweeted about the great anger NFL fans showed towards the protests by booing any of the teams that protested the anthem.
The booing at the NFL football game last night, when the entire Dallas team dropped to its knees, was loudest I have ever heard. Great anger
— Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) September 26, 2017
Trump also warned that the NFL’s business would “go to hell” if they continued to allow the protests.
“Trump has urged fans to stop watching the sport as long as the protests continue and called on the NFL to require players to stand during the anthem.
“In my opinion, the NFL has to change,” Trump told reporters while leaving for a speech in Indiana. “Or you know what’s going to happen? Their business is going to go to hell.”
Fans are starting to strike back.
While ratings were slightly up this week – which was largely because last year’s Monday night game was competing against the first Presidential debate – ratings are down 11 percent overall.
The number one reason given in every public survey is the anthem protests.
Now Direct TV is losing money over the NFL players’ anti-American behavior.
