Donald Trump won the Presidency despite losing the popular vote because the Electoral College determines the winner of the election.
Now that constitutional norm put in place by the Founding Fathers is in danger.
And that’s because this piece of bad news about the Electoral College has Trump red with rage.
Every 10 years, the United States government conducts a census that determines how many Congressional Districts – and thus Electoral College votes – each state gets.
The 2020 census will set the map for elections held between 2022 and 2030.
And the news is not good for Donald Trump and the Republicans.
According to research conducted by the nonpartisan Center for Immigration Studies, mass immigration will tilt the Electoral College towards the Democrats for the next decade.
Due to an explosion in the immigrant population, red states such as Ohio, Georgia, Alabama, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, Missouri, Oklahoma and South Carolina among others will lose Congressional seats and Electoral College votes.
Deep blue states like California, Illinois and New York stand to be the biggest beneficiaries.
Even once scarlet red Texas is moving toward a purple state because of the explosion in the foreign-born population.
“Ohio will have three fewer seats in 2020 than it otherwise would have had but for the presence of all immigrants and their minor children in other states. Michigan and Pennsylvania will have two fewer; and Alabama, Arkansas, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, Oklahoma, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Utah, West Virginia, and Wisconsin will each have one fewer seat. California will have 11 more seats in 2020 than it otherwise would have; New York and Texas will have four more seats each; Florida will have three more seats; New Jersey will have two more seats; and Illinois and Massachusetts will each have one additional seat,” the Center for Immigration Studies findings showed.
To make matters worse, 24 of the 26 Congressional seats that will be lost come from states Donald Trump won.
And the vast majority of those new seats – and Electoral College votes – will transfer to deep blue states no Republican ever stands a chance of winning.
“Of the 26 seats that will be lost, 24 are from states that voted for Donald Trump in 2016. Of states that will gain House seats because of immigration, 19 seats will go to the solidly Democratic states of California, New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, and Illinois. Texas is the only solidly Republican state that gains, while Florida is a swing state,” the study explained.
Going forward this means the Democrats are gifted 19 “free” Electoral College votes putting them that much closer to the magic number of 270.
That means in future elections, Democrats will need to win fewer swing states than the Republican nominee because the states that start out in the Democrat column are worth much more in terms of Electoral College votes.
