The change at Fox News continues to ripple across the political and media landscape.
These maneuvers have consequences for Donald Trump and his re-election prospects.
And now this popular Fox News host is about to make one giant career change.
Shepard Smith was one of the “Fox News originals.”
Smith joined the network in 1996 and hosted the network’s 3PM news hour until he resigned last October.
In his final months on the air, Smith dropped the pretense of objective journalism and began peddling falsehoods that Democrats tell each other about Donald Trump and passing them off as “straight news.”
Smith feuded with Tucker Carlson and when the network didn’t take Smith’s side in the scuffle Smith walked away from the network.
But Smith made it clear he planned to work in TV again.
Smith has to wait out his contract with Fox News to expire, but an exclusive report in the Daily Beast revealed that fake news CNN and MSNBC will enter a bidding war for Smith’s services with MSNBC hoping to make Smith a centerpiece of a reshuffled primetime lineup.
The Daily Beast exclusively reports:
MSNBC talent and staffers are bracing for a major 2020 shakeup amid discussion of moving ratings-challenged Chuck Todd to a morning slot and execs talking with Fox News escapee Shepard Smith.
The goal of any reshuffle would be to shed ratings dead weight in the lead-up to the election. Sources at the network cautioned that a new look for the lineup is still up in the air, but brass have been batting around several options.
One of those is new blood in the form of Smith, who abruptly quit Fox late last year after on-air skirmishes with Tucker Carlson and other primetime hosts. Smith has had conversations with MSNBC President Phil Griffin about a potential gig when his non-compete clause expires, although his price tag is expected to be considerable for any interested network.
“It’s unclear what slot he would take, but we’d want him in primetime,” an MSNBC insider told The Daily Beast. “We are well aware [Jeff] Zucker [president of CNN] is also pursuing him, as are a number of the networks.”
When Smith was on Fox News his biased and false commentary was so over the top anti-Trump that even Fox News viewers like Rush Limbaugh wondered if Fox kept Smith on the air because Fox executives wanted to change into the “Never Trump” network.
Smith heading to fake news CNN or MSNBC would sum up everything critics believe is wrong with the media.
After Donald Trump won the Presidency, Smith stopped reporting the news and instead began promoting “narratives.”
This means Smith spun events and ignored the truth and objective facts in favor of a storyline.
Instead of being punished for abusing the trust of his viewers, Smith will be rewarded with a multi-million dollar contract and a promotion from a daytime anchor to primetime.
