Chuck Schumer’s worst nightmare has become a reality.
The chances that he will be able to flip the Senate just got a huge setback.
This steamy sex message is the last thing Chuck Schumer wanted public.
The Senate race in North Carolina between Republican incumbent Sen. Thom Tillis, who just tested positive for coronavirus, and Cal Cunningham is one of the tightest Senate races in the country.
The last thing Chuck Schumer wanted was for Cunningham, the Democratic U.S. Senate candidate, to be caught in a sex scandal right before the election.
Cunningham had previously been leading in the polls before it came out that he was sending text messages of a sexual nature to a California public relations strategist, Arlene Guzman Todd, when they are both married.
“Would make my day to roll over and kiss you about now,” Cunningham wrote to her.
WhileTodd texted him, “I have flexibility this month — done with school, training, big RFPs, etc. So the only thing I want on my to do list is you.”
In another message, she said “Pick a day, city, make up an excuse for the fam, ditch a staffer, starch your white shirt, and be ready to kiss a lot.”
While there are no dates attached to the messages in one text, Cunningham said that he’s “Nervous about the next 100 days,” which sounds like a possible reference to the election.
Cunningham admitting that the text messages were authenticbut said that he would not be dropping out of the race.
“I have hurt my family, disappointed my friends, and am deeply sorry. The first step in repairing those relationships is taking complete responsibility, which I do. I ask that my family’s privacy be respected in this personal matter,” Cunningham told The Observer in a statement. “I remain grateful and humbled by the ongoing support that North Carolinians have extended in this campaign, and in the remaining weeks before this election I will continue to work to earn the opportunity to fight for the people of our state.”
This is not just a “personal matter.”
Cunningham is a Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army Reserve which could cause him additional trouble.
Joanna Rodriguez, who is press secretary for the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said that the real scandal of the case was the fact that Cunningham sent those texts to “someone who isn’t your wife, violating Uniform Code of Military Justice & risking court martial by having an affair w/ someone married to a veteran — all during your campaign centered on your ‘call to duty’ and ‘honor.’”
This affair shows just what kind of man Cunningham is and voters will respond accordingly.
