Sometimes you have to be careful what you wish for.
Democrats waged a smear campaign to force House Intelligence Chairman Devin Nunes to step aside after he discovered the Obama administration using surveillance to hurt Donald Trump.
But their celebration when Nunes pulled back was short lived, once Trey Gowdy made his big announcement.
Gowdy will help lead the House Intelligence Committee’s investigation in Nunes absence.
Politico reports:
“House Intelligence Committee Chairman Devin Nunes (R-Calif.) will temporarily step aside from an investigation into Russian meddling in the 2016 election, including interactions between Moscow and the Trump campaign.
The move comes as the House Ethics Committee announced that it is investigating allegations that Nunes may have mishandled classified information. With the Ethics Committee now formally involved in the dispute, Nunes could no longer oversee the Russia probe, although he will remain in place as chairman of the Intelligence Committee.
The Intelligence Committee’s Russia investigation will be taken over by Reps. Michael Conaway (R-Texas), Trey Gowdy (R-S.C.) and Tom Rooney (R-Fla.).
In a statement, Nunes blamed complaints filed with the Office of Congressional Ethics over his decision to brief President Donald Trump on intelligence intercepts of conversations between Trump campaign aide and Russian officials during the election.”
Americans are learning the real scandal is Obama’s team unmasking Trump officials caught up in surveillance and then illegally leaking the existence of those intercepts to the press.
At the center of this storm is former National Security Advisor Susan Rice.
Journalist Mike Ceronovich broke the story that she requested the names of Trump officials that wee masked in intelligence reports.
While Rice denied leaking the names, someone in the Obama administration leaked that information to the press.
That is a felony.
And with Gowdy stepping up his role in the investigation, the American people can have confidence the committee will follow the facts where they lead and uncover any wrongdoing.
Gowdy proved his investigative chops when he chaired the Benghazi Select Committee.
Their investigation demolished Hillary Clinton and Obama’s lies about their failed response to the Benghazi terrorist attack.
And the committee’s most important discovery may have been the existence of Clinton’s private email server.
If Rice or any Obama official committed an illegal act or abused their power, Gowdy is very likely to uncover it and work to hold them accountable.
Obama should be nervous.
Spying on political opponents and leaking the results would be the worst abuse of power in American history.
Some have even called it worse than Watergate.
If anyone can get to the bottom of this scandal, it is Trey Gowdy.
