Donald Trump campaigned on the pledge to “Drain the Swamp” in Washington.
Now that his administration is being undermined by leaks suspected to be coming from Obama holdovers, it’s now more vital than ever that Trump take action.
And Attorney General Jeff Sessions has made the first move in Trump’s quest to drain the swamp.
Attorney General Sessions asked for the resignation of the remaining 46 U.S. attorneys who were holdovers from the Obama administration.
“President Donald Trump’s administration asked all remaining U.S. attorneys appointed by President Barack Obama to offer their resignations Friday, setting off confusion about the impact of the move and prompting warnings from Democrats that abrupt changes could undermine law enforcement.
“The Attorney General has now asked the remaining 46 presidentially appointed U.S. Attorneys to tender their resignations in order to ensure a uniform transition,” Justice Department spokeswoman Sarah Flores said in a statement Friday. “Until the new U.S. Attorneys are confirmed, the dedicated career prosecutors in our U.S. Attorney’s Offices will continue the great work of the Department in investigating, prosecuting, and deterring the most violent offenders.”
Flores initially declined to comment when asked if the prosecutors had to leave their posts right away, but said later Friday that the resignations were to be “effective immediately.”
The removal of U.S. attorneys has been politically fraught for years, with the midterm dismissal of eight chief federal prosecutors in December 2006 causing a firestorm that ultimately led to the resignation of Attorney General Alberto Gonzales. Friday’s move to dismiss the political appointees of a previous administration seemed more routine, but the timing and scope of such dismissals have often led to charges and counter-charges that they violated prior precedents.”
It is routine for an incoming administration to ask political appointees to resign.
But previous administrations kept holdovers on until their replacements were confirmed.
The Clinton administration also asked for resignations in March of their first year in office.

However, those previous administrations never had to face bureaucrats adopting a war footing like the Trump administration has been forced to deal with.
Obama loyalists burrowed in the government have engaged in an aggressive war to damage and delegitimize the Trump administration.
But Trump supporters urged the President to purge Obama political appointees – which is well within his right – sooner rather than later.
Sean Hannity also pleaded with Trump to remove Obama loyalists from the administration before they inflicted permanent damage on his presidency.
Fox News reported:
“Sean Hannity thinks President Donald Trump should fire all the “deep state, Obama holdover” government bureaucrats because many are “hell-bent” on destroying his presidency.
“It’s time for the Trump administration to begin to purge these saboteurs before it’s too late,” Hannity said in his opening monologue tonight.
He pointed out that President Abraham Lincoln fired more than 78 percent of executive branch employees during his presidency.
“It’s time now for President Trump to follow Abraham Lincoln’s example and fire anyone and everyone who’s actively working against him in government,” Hannity said.
“It’s very important for President Trump to act right now,” Hannity said. “He’s got to end the leaks that are plaguing this administration.”
“My message tonight is simple: Every holdover from the Obama administration, they need to go.”
